Type 1 SPD and over head lines

Hi all

i have just recently watched the NAPIT webinar on SPD’s and it says a Type 1 SPD device should be installed in premises supplied by overhead lines

I’m assuming including domestic properties

up to now I have only been using type 2’s in the consumer unit

is everyone fitting type 1 in this situation
and Is this in addition to a type 2 ? Didn’t really clarify this

You would have the Type 1 upfront to protect against flash over from lightning strikes they generally do not protect electronic equipment your Type 2 serves this purpose.

It seems type 1 are not that easy to get hold of, type 2 are really common and most brands make them now but type 1 are not that readily available from looking around are they usually a special order rather than off the shelf?

Yes, been having this d*ck around recently as well, having to tell a customer their 5 year old CU is hopelessly out of date because 63A type AC RCDs no SPD etc managed to get them to agree to RCD swapout and Type 2 SPD but the type 1 was the straw that broke the camels back..! No option to fit into CU (Hager) and a standalone unit was going to be £400 fitted (at least) so a flat 'No' there. Best option I found to offer was a Lewden unit with combined Type 1+2 and chunky fuse carriers, special order only and over £300 with the VAT. I'm not lining Kirsty's pockets as I think this fiasco is mostly her fault.

Yes, my thoughts exactly! Just been looking at a few prices.

I mean Im all up for improved safety where possible but the cost of all these new requirements are adding up and up

Why are they not readily availiable

I bet next to none actually get fitted when they are supposed to be in the domestic market
