Just been in local B&Q and heard an assistant telling a customer how and what he needs to add a RCD shower unit to existing consumer unit. Meter tails, Henley block ect. Why do we bother with Part P.?

So wrong in every aspect. B&Q = burried and quick. Some poor man/woman will go home and add this unit, oh dear just the thought of it.
So wrong.

hmmm, now i'm getting a bit old and knackered for the tools, maybe it's time for me to get a job at b&q. then i can advise them " i'll sell it you, but get a qualified sparks to fit it"

It still amazing that they sell cu's, rcbo's, 4, 6 and 10mm cable!

In their defence they will say its stock that electricians can buy and that on each info instructions it states "must be carried out by a competent person" but that will be looked over due to these people trying to save money regardless of their families safety.

If our trade bodies, NICEIC, Elecsa & Napit had any teeth what so-ever they would be trying to do something about this. Its all very well the big sheds selling lights, sockets etc but selling CU's, MCB's etc - not in my opinion!

We all know its wrong but what is stopping them giving advise on installation as 'YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE PART P REGISTERED TO DO ELECTRICAL WORK' its not governed. You only need to notify it.

We need an 'Electric Safe' like 'Gas Safe'

Agree 100%, I changed career about 8 years ago to become a spark and l am shocked by how unregulated this industry is given how potential dangerous the job is.

the problem with a lot of this is that while a member of the general public may be quite competent to do electrical work (physically wiring up whatever), he/she does not possess the knowledge or equipment to test and ensure safety. whilst work they do might appear safe and work perfectly, they could be sitting on a time bomb, just waiting for some poor sod to get electrocuted or cremated. we all have ideas about how things should be done, but until those idiots at westminster get some common sense injected into their thick skulls, nothing will be done .

Every job notify or not still needs to be tested and Certs issued
agreed, we know that, but is joe public going to notify when he's just wired up his garage/shed/whatever? he's not going to go out and buy a MFT and complete a cert. coz. 1. he don't know what he's doing. 2. he won't spend a penny more than he has to. 3. who's going to know he's done the work anyway.

A common myth is that only Gassafe registered people can work on gas supplies. That is wrong. Anyone can work on it, so long as they are competent, and they are not doing it as a paid duty.
So if you think you are competent, you can work on the gas supply in your own house.

Got to be worth another try, and again, and again...

How about something along the lines of:

Dear Sir,
REF: Electrical Safety – fatalities should be expected.
I’m writing to you to bring your attention to the complete lack of control regarding the sale of major electrical components and thus the potential lack of safety regarding work conducted in homes across your constituency.
The UK Electrical industry produced Part P to the building regulations which came into force on the 1st January 2005 and this requires notification of certain works to the LABC (Local Area Building Control).
Many people like myself have undertaken the necessary training, examinations and registration with trade organisations like Elecsa, NICEIC and Napit, so we can undertake the required works and complete the required notification to LABC. Members of such schemes are competent, experienced and hold insurance for the benefit of homeowners
Our concerns are regarding the completely unregulated supply of major components by retailers which allow people who are not competent, to purchase said parts and make potentially life threatening changes to their homes.
We are calling on Parliament to recognise this issue and take forward a scheme “Electrical Safe”, which operate along the lines of “Gas Safe”. I’m sure you wouldn’t get an unregistered Gas installer to install your new boiler, so why would you allow an unregistered person to install your new 10.5 Kw power shower? An item which could kill in seconds.
We, as professionals treat our customers with respect and with safely in mind. I’d like to think that Parliament will make changes to ensure that steps are made to tighten up an industry which needs better control.
I await your response with interest.
Yours faithfully,

Well nothing seems to be governed then...ahhh this country

Well Murdoch, I'm going to find the email address of my local mp and send your draft letter. I may make a couple of additional changes to include a few things that I would like to see changed for the better. Again well done :).

That's why I use sunday afternoon to drop "info" leaflets on cars in the big orange shed carpark - these info leaflets have my details on and also about PART P with electrics and even offer an incentive for me to carry out the work - COMPLIES WITH BUILDING CONTROL i do offer 15% discount if produces leaflet and have had quite a bit of uptake on it 2hours on a sunday morning to get the return has worked

Saying that speaking to the guy at my local tradepoint branch and those people in store advising are on 20 hours per week at £12 per hour giving advice (must be C&G Qualified) and have at least 6months experience to apply I was asked if I wanted to become a member of their staff to provide advice (I only buy plaster and screws there) you can imagine i rolled around laughing and then asked him to tell me another joke

Murdoch do you want me to post up on the new thread the links to MP's email addresses to make it easyer for members?

Thanks, but I added it to my new thread.

For what its worth I'd be prepared a pay a higher scheme fee if and only if the rules were tighter, the suply routes controlled, and "pub" type contractors were held to account!

forget that I'll create an online petition to no10 if we can get 100'000 signatures on it then it becomes eligible for debate in parliament I'm sure we can get 100'000 signatures on it

what do you say
