I have been asked to install a power supply for approx 2m² of electric underfloor heating. I'm not installing the stuff itself but I am awaiting the delivery of it to find out the rating of it and where I need to be running cable.

I wanted to know if it needs some form of thermostat, or does it just run off a switched spur, switched on and off when desired?

This leads me to another query, surely a sensor needs to be installed in order for the thermostat to function. Or is this all incorporated in the underfloor heating mat.

I am not responsible for laying the stuff, nor am I the person who's ordered it or even know what it is going to look like. I have never worked with underfloor heating before. I have just been instructed to give it a supply (which in my head would be in the form of a fused (maybe switched) spur (if not a circuit of its own depending on the rating).

Some advice?

My brother in law had his bathroom done a while back. Tiler who laid the mat must have nipped the heat element cable. Consequently he cannot now have any of the upstairs sockets brought up to 17th standards.... Which considering where the UFH is I would really want it RCD protected...

Moral of the story is if you end up laying the element out etc be careful and make sure it is not unduly stressed and the subfloor is clean etc.. have heard of others tiling the floor and finding it does not then work....nightmare !!

Also, make sure you test as apple and tele say, and write down your element resistances etc, cos that could be your get-out if the tiler does something daft!

Is it possible to power up the elements before the tiles go down, to unequivocally prove that it works, as well as the normal tests, or will it overheat or something by not being buried in the floor as it is designed to be? I'm just thinking of proving to the customer that our stuff works before 'they' go and muck it up.

Good point Stroppy, yes it is possible to do that. I have done that previously but never thought to mention it.

The element of my brother in laws still works though there is obviously some earth leakage.

Will he stop using it?? No!

hmm. when we had the shower room done, i had bought the ufh and stat, fully intending to install it myself in synch. with the tiler. he said he'd done loads of ufh and would prefer to do it himself as he did the floor and tiling. i tested it before tiles were laid and after. perfect readings, tails and 2 sensors fed through conduit up wall to stat. position. ready for me to fit stat .and FCU. and his tiling was spot on as well. can't fault the lad.

The rcd spur being fitted is probably because there wasn't rcd protection of that supply.
