can anyone tell me what can be done about unqualified and non competent "handy men " doing electrical intalations? :veryangry2:+*

I've got one near me - and recently he called me in to sort a problem in his own house!

I commented on one or two things I saw in a constructive way, and heard from a customer, just this week, that he's no longer doing anything electrical!

The thing is here though ...i reckon a lot of these guys dont even have an MFT/seperates so how the hell are they supposed to know if there work is up to standard....IR....disconnection times etc.....I bet even if you pushed a tester in front of em they wouldn`t have a clue about how to use it and/or interpret test results.......its just "sling some cable/s in and its ÂŁ200 in ar$e pocket".........

i would have if ide have operated an outside light switch ,but on seeing he had put pvc conduit into the top with standerd fittings and didnt even open drain hole i checked it first ..finding it full of water.............and he just said "well i didnt know that was wrong" amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I like to make sure that the householder is aware of anything I find when I'm called out to put things right. I also tend to point out that it would have cost about the same to have had the work done by a competent person in the first place.

Hopefully a combination of word of mouth and natural selection will eventually take care of them.

It might take for someone to either die or be seriously hurt before something is done but this has done the rounds in here loads of times...........What we have here is public ignorance. He has a nice van and all the tools.....so he must be good......yep we all know what ba11ocks that is but.........

Then tell me someone competent did these!

Awful

`thing is though Murdoch.....when you uncover crap like that and you know its going to be sorted and done right....then you can have a good old laugh at the ridiculous attempt at wireing...lol........:stuart:

The trouble is is that there's no way of stopping people doing shoddy work, ok maybe a qualified spark will get the job eventually when they get more trouble but ''Botcher Bill n Sparky Marky'' are off doing their other jobs and getting money for it. How will it ever change unless they just stop doing it ?? who's going to stop them? they undercut the qualified sparks as they have minimal overheads/insurance/schemes, and I recon a lot are mates from the pub and the old '''yeah i'll do your lights for ÂŁ20 n a packet of cigs''' jobs. The way it is I doubt it can be stopped.
