Using a car battery to power a home

Hi,

Firstly, i'd just like to say that i apologise in advance for my lack of knowledge on technical jargon, so hopefully you can help me out.

Basically, there's a garage-like shack round the corner from my house which the kids have had an idea to turn into their "hideout". Anyway, as it's a standalone shack there's no electricity running to it and i was wondering whether i'd be able to run a few basic electronics (a lamp, a radiator etc.) through a car battery?

If anyone knows how to do this, or has a convenient and relatively cheap secondary method than please share your knowledge .

certainly you could run a few 12V lamps, but they wont last long

but i dont see how you can a radiator

you have to appreciate the huge current draw of connecting things to a battery

take a 12V 60W car lamp

that pulls 5A

A car battery rated at, say 50A/H (ampere hour)

will supply 50A for an hour or 5 amps for 10 hours. But if you do that ant take the battery to Zero, the plates will buckle, and it will be Kaput!

so the reality is, an old car battery you get from a scrap merchants wont give you anything like its rated capacity.

then of course, you wpould have to spend two days recharging it before you use it again!

not really feasible to be honest

and any other solutions are expensive:- small petrol powered generator, solar panels, or bringing in mains from somewhere

you can get wee DC fan heaters:

only 150/300W. how warm it would keep the shack tho is anyones guess. could also run a radio off it no probs; just use an old car stereo.

but like shakey says the pain's going to be charging them up again when they've all too quickly discharged.

could always use a space heater!

was just thinking (a rarity). how about using LEDs?

years ago ,in the 1970s ,the heath govement made us endure a winter of misery which ment a three day week and power cuts every night ,just because of his bloody minded attitude towards the working man
well ,my old dad rigged up a dynamo with a couple of car batterys and a old bike ,us kids took it in turn to peddle and we had lights all over the house,i remember he said they used to charge ht batterys for the radio in the war the same way
