using a multi meter

One of my friends is replacing he's kitchen fan. The original colour cores that he has is red, black, white how would you find out which one was earth using a multimeter?

I know the normal mains colour code is red/brown=live
black/blue=neutral

Green/Yellow = earth

with power to the fan you should get 240V L-N and 240V L-E, 0V N-E. but be careful using a multimeter on a live circuit. an approved voltage tester is safer. it's quite possible that you have 2 L s, permanent and switched, if fan has overrun timer.

You cannot distinguish neutral and earth at a single point using a multimeter as the voltage readings will be the same whichever way round they are. I recommend you isolate the circuit and use proper continuity tests back to the supply.

Or find where it's fed from and copy that then confirm correct via dead tests as per above

main switch off, open a nearest light and check continuity with terminals up there.
if your leads are not long enough you can improwise with a lentght of wire.
