Hi all

Just got a metrel mi3000. Was using it today to test a new cu job. But I'm confused...when I do continuity tests on a ring I can do tests on the crossed line and neutral using the plug adaptor but I can't use the plug adapter to do test on crossed earth and line!?
This means I have to open up the socket and use the probes.
Am I missing something. Is there a way of changing the setting so that it tests between line and earth?
Any thoughts? Cheers.

So you've changed a CU and you aren't sure how the tester works. Please tell me this is your own home.

If it is anyhing like their MI3002 then the only way to do what you want to do is to get hold of a KEWTECH kewcheck R2 plug or similar. Then plug the line and neutral leads from the METREL into the L(R1) and E(R2) sockets on the back of the 3-pin plug allowing your to do R1 + R2 measurements. I emailed METREL to suggest that it is misleading to do what purports to be an R1 + R2 ie Line and Circuit Protective Conductor test using line and neutral probes.

I know how it works. But with say a kewtech tester you could swap out the leads connected to the plug adapter to perform the test whereas with the metrel it is all fixed so you can't specify which points of the socket you want to test. I don't mind using the probes but it just takes longer. Do you have a mi3000?

What on earth (no pun intended) do you mean by that mate? It's a bog standard 3 lead tester carrying out a bog standard continuity test. There's no difference in carrying out an R1+R2 test than any other 2 lead continuity test.
 
To the OP, if you're getting an answer on one part of a continuity test but not on another what does that tell you?
 
Osg says on a ring you are supposed to test l to l, n to n, cpc to cpc and then cross l to n and l to cpc. With the metrel you can't test at the plug end for l to cpc. That is the point I am making.
