another facf finding mission.

how many of us electrical contractors have dead stock that we store in our vans, sheds and stores,

i know myself i have that much stuff in my shed that i am on a daily basis buying materials that i dont need to and also have materials in the shed that i collect on my way old brakers fuses etc,

are other contractors the same, i just cleaned out my shead today and couldnt believe what i had in there,

is this a common thing when a large job is finished and all remaining materials are taken away out the container, where do yours end up

I think after reading this we need a new forum section call "The Flea Market" were we can flog off stuff to each other "one mans tat is anothers gold dust" I mean we dont need to use it or even need it we can just swap the stuff just think of the joy as postie brings us a box of goodies we can rumage through in the shed with a bottle of ale or two, we could even have a secret Santa at chrissy time, and a box of surpises section where we dont know whats in it, the potenial here is huge

Wonder what they'd make of a Martindale brush seater then? The last company I worked for tried to take it off me, "it wasn't safe"!

Geez Tony not seen them for years either! The youngsters probably take the whole shift to wonder how to use it then near the end of the shift finally ask what its for.......lol

Edit: given motors are sent away for repair now or are deemed to be disposable perhaps they wouldn't use the gear we mentioned after all Tony.

When I started in the iron trade, we had failure after failure of crane motor slip rings.

They thought I was mad when I’d have ½ tonne of rotor spinning in the lathe honing the rings by hand. I was enjoying myself, everyone else legged it out of the way until I’d finished.

Oh how i miss these good old days when you as a spark had to actually repair things and not just send things like motors away to get fixed! Where i am not many sparks i have come across can do this type of work now Tony....times are a changing....not always for the better

Was working on a job for a large contractor a few years ago. At the end of the job the builders wanted us to clear site, but the contractor couldn’t get any vans down to clear the materials from the site containers (company based up country).

So there solution was to skip it all!! They couldn’t return it to the wholeseller, and it couldn’t be used on other jobs (paperwork wouldn’t tally). So I had the lucky job...well....lucky in my case, to clear it all, as they said I could take all I wanted but, It had to be gone that day!

I had boxes & boxes of MK conduit gear, sheets of paxolin, MK second fix gear, 3-phase distribution boards, light fixings & lamps, screws & fixings....you name it, it was there!

I’m still steadily using it up!!! :builder:
