I hope this is posted in the correct forum...

I am looking for some lamp flex for a modular lighting design i am working on. It will need to be able to take UK mains electricity for a standard (not low energy) light bulb.

What i am after is a cable that hangs like rope, as opposed to hanging like something with a metal core. ie if a loop is hung over a hook it will deform in a "drape" as opposed to maintaining an "O" shape.

I have looked at a lot of sites offering decorative flex etc and none of them seem to come close.

Does anyone know if such a product exists? Cost, within reason, will not be an issue.

Many thanks

DP

I'm basically after something that is more like (attached files ) "rope" than "cable".

I want a "floppiness" that makes it hang without forming a large circle but instead hangs in flattened loops.

I know my descriptions here aren't great. I hope there making some sort of sense...

You could look at a HOFR TYPE FLEX. ( heat , oil, fire resistant )

Quite high spec stuff compared to standard PVC. it's the type of stuff you will find attached to submersible pumps, domestic pond or industrial draining.

I used some recently as machine wiring, and as I needed it in hurry I got it from either wickes, home base or B&Q. It has some great properties, good temp resistance ( why I needed it ) and it was labelled as pond pump cable.

Look for HOFR actually printed on the cable.

Try google fabric covered cable or twisted lamp flex. Stuff made for old lamps etc. As each core is separate (braided) it will be a lot more flexible than multi core. Also the fabric will give you the rope look.

You could try silicone high temperature cable this is fine stranded flex and suitable for 230V. I think your minimum csa is 1mm2 for lighting, but this is a very flexible cable and can be bent round quite a lot. however it is about ÂŁ2 per metre!
For greater flexibility you could see if you could use insulated and sheathed singles such as used in aircraft (dual wall) but this may not give you the effect you want and would be more expensive.

Flex is one of the world's most famous thinnest lighting system, it is used by LEDs and thin film. I think, you could try Led Neon product. It's looks like traditional neon. It's very versatile, low energy use and easy to install.

Hi: I don't know what country your in but in the UK where the Forum is based, Flex is an abbreviation for flexible wire.
