Hello everyone. Been asked to upgrade a consumer unit from the old rewireable type. The current set up has like 1mm in earthing conductor, does anyone know was this EVER legal???? Have a look at the pic, you can hardly see it it comes from the MET behind a wooden board into the CU.

I'm not saying it was correct practice but I bet if you do an adiabatic calc for that you'll find it's not as badly undersize as it looks. Besides the cutout (and possibly including the cutout it it was 40 or even 25A way back) it would probably outlast any fuse in the house.
 
Looks 1940's ish,seen these plenty,don't be surprised if earth wire is joined under floor by wrapping round a screw and washer against a joist...although as mentioned before,some of these installations still pass IR etc,and you have to wonder how some modern installations will fare in 70 or 80 years...
