When I'm trying to identify which circuit to switch off I like to hear or see the effect of turning off a circuit breaker or isolating switch. For sockets I use a Martindale BZ101 Buzz It. For other circuits I sometimes wedge a voltstick (can't remember which make and it's out in the van) against the cable and listen, but it's a bit quiet. Does anyone know of one of these things with a good loud buzz or whistle which doesn't need a button holding in for it to work?

Theres a website called rack-a-tiers who sell handy electricians tools, theyve got a device like you suggest...problem is, its for the american voltage :-(

I have a Fluke 1AC, I also have another good one I bought off ebay, works just as good and probably came from the same place.....they are on ebay for £2.00 from the far east and I have bought a few already to give to people I worked with, I keep a few spare incase somebody asks to borrow, as they never get given back anyway,only problem is the post, I bought a batch of 3 from the internet about 7 weeks ago and they didn't turn up.....which happens quite a bit now with un-registered parcels coming in via the post here...even parcels inside the UK be warned you should really get at least recorded delivery as there's a lot of pilfering these days everywhere...

I carry a pair of snips 100% effective at detecting live wires!!!!!! and usually have the added bonus of tripping the circuit without need to trace it.

And create a built wire stripper !
