Voltage still present with MCB off

Hi All,

Currently undertaking a rewire of a kitchen and when splicing the new light circuit to the old I inadvertently tripped the front end RCD. I was perplexed as I had proved circuit dead first.
However when testing I found that the circuit still had a reading of 1 volt.

The property is a maisonette with two light circuits. The other circuit was still live. It was late this evening so no chance to do any further tests, so was just wondering if anyone had a rough idea as to what this might be. Have not come across this before with a 1 volt reading.

I am changing the board on this property after the kitchen has been completed (customer in a rush for xmas) and found a low IR of 0.16M on a global test of the board. Would this cause 1 volt to appear?

Your thoughts appreciated.

Dan

Who did the electrics in the kitchen?

Thought I might as well go out with a bang!

Kiers1970 you are a ****!

Dont let any negative comments get to you Danny. I get the feeling theres a few long running members who get bored seeing the same questions pop up and instinctively respond with a negative comment. Theres also lots of long running members who have given me invaluable advice, so I wouldn't give up just yet, otherwise its just you who ends up losing out.

I kind of like it here :smile5:

ps.. no real need for swearing though:nono:

You have started the job so I would imagine you will have to finish it.

Don't wait until you change the DB before locating your low IR reading remember if its a globle test you might find its down to 1 cct and a simple fix.
Test each cct on their own and take it from there.

Have a search for phantom voltage on here that may answer your question but I would't worry about 1 volt!

helpful advice, just a shame that you didnt get there first to answer danny's question

Danny spark I was reading the post too and I can see what you think are negative comments but if you are indeed a spark this is one of the basics that should be the most obvious. The negative like responses are because we can't believe what we are reading.
No one knows everything but without the basics you are better leaving well alone

I have a Fair Few fella, and was just making a point, My meggar mulitmeter is old though and my trusted companion and it needs calibrating really, just suggesting the 1 volt measured may have been down to zero ing thats all, If I actually test for voltage I wouldn't use it, but the OP didn't say what meter he checked the voltage with, I was thinking multi meter myelf, but unless he comes back we won't know.

As this is a forum for "electricians" may be it would be helpful if the posters profile indicated the current qualification / training status

IMO the OP brought the negative comments on himself with what he asked and showed a total lack of basic knowledge with the information he posted

For me the OP is one of the engage keyboard and post a minor problem without understanding what you are doing members who hasn't got a skin thick enough to take the resulting flack
