Voltage tester, am i thinking about this too much?

Would something like a Fluke T100 do for an apprentice, or should i splash out on a T5 something or other?

I use a combivolt 2, it has both lcd display and led display. Ive had it for around 3 years. Getting a bit tired now like...Ive never had a proven unit and the last time I used one was at college. I prove my VI's on a known supply and this has satisfied the Elecsa assessor in the past.

I use a T5-1000 at work, handy having voltage/current in one package. As for proving units, if you fail to get a reading/indication stop and investigate before carrying out any work.

Bought myself a t5-1000 and I love it, simple, seems tough and got no reason not to like it. Downside is they ain't cheap.

one thing to think about is that any tester that has a lcd display, indicating the exact voltage present should be calibrated. more expense, whereras the simpler led voltage indicators don't require calibration.

The HSE GN just says that the test instrument should be proved to be working on a known live source or a proprietary proving unit before and after use, so there is no requirement for a proving unit, per se, but as has been highlighted sometimes one might be necessary.
