Weeping sockets

R

Roger

Went to look at a house today ,present owner been in there for 44 years and brought from new.

All ring main sockets have green slim weeping from them ! it is down the walls on some and is on the skirting board, removed one and the old grey twin and earth lookes like the pvc is breaking down and secreting something used in the construction of it.Most of the plugs used on the sockets have green residue on the pins as well.It only appears to come from the live and neutral insulation as the earth wire looks clean.
Took the cover of the old fuse board and there is evidence of it happening in there as well.
I thought it might have been damp initially but not the case. Its that sort of copper oxidation ssen outside.
I will return and guess do a IR test on some of the circuits and this should give me a indication as to the extent of the problem.

Has anyone seen anything like this before ???

Pleasure mate i would reccomend if nothing is done to the installation it be tested sooner rather than later say every 12 months at the most , its a horrible situation and all you can do is advise , but you have to be cruel to be kind some times we can be in a very awquard situation with your hands tied , and rewiring can be so invasive some times your right about the no 2 days thats what makes the job intresting

all the best with it

Nick
