When I noticed the Part review applied only to England,I e-mailed my views on getting shot of the nonsense to the Welsh government (hoping for some fresh thinking to emerge )

What a disapointment, they are leaving it exactly as it is until they have had a review of Part L
They will see how things pan out in England, before doing their own review and any possible future changes

So unfortunately,we in Wales will have this useless garbage unchanged r, I would expect to be, at least the next 5 to 10 years or maybe longer

Here is the reply if you want to interpret it yourself

Building Regulations – Part P

Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development John Griffiths AM concerning Building Regulations Part P - Electrical Safety.

The Welsh Government is currently undertaking a review of Part L (Conservation of Fuel and Power) of the Building Regulations and will be going out to consultation later in the spring. It is not our intention to carry out a review of any other areas of the Building Regulations until the Part L review is complete and the new Part L approved documents are redrafted.

We are aware that an English review of Part P is currently underway and through our regular engagement with the Communities and Local Government (CLG) in England (and the other administrations) we will monitor developments. CLG are also in the process of introducing additional “Authorisation Criteria” requirements for new and existing members of Competent Persons Schemes including the requirement of being UKAS accredited.
This will require independent appraisal of each member within the schemes.

The Welsh Government will review the outcomes of the English consultation in relation to Part P and will consider this and any other future changes in Wales on the basis of evidence, with public safety being a key factor.

Any further changes to the regulations in relation to electrical safety would be subject to public consultation, therefore I would encourage you return your comments for consideration.

So there we have it,

I dont fully understand the differences between English legislation and Welsh legislation. As far as i was aware Part P was applicable in both England and wales, the phrase that sticks in my mind is "Part P of the building regulations England and Wales, as amended". If this is the case, then how can the Welsh opt out of the changes to English Part P?

Cheers..........Howard

wouldnt it be nice if we could all do something and force them to do away with this part p garbage!I went off house bashing as I find it offensive that with all my years of experience I need to do another course to wire a house yet a Electrical Trainee with less experience can jump straight on it.

sorry Des ...but why is everyone in wales called griffiths...or jones...or price...?...its always the same...

all part of phony blair's attempt to get useless ----ers off the dole queue.
well if it was that Tel....then he failed miserably.....worse now than ever and it was his government that nurtured this.....no, his crimes consist of leading this country down the path of war that nobody wanted or needed......and allowing a welfare state to morph into communism where regardless of how much or how little a person did....they get paid and the state provides..menicing and cruel.....its the sort of thing that any old soviet polic bureau would have been proud of.....lada or FSO anyone?...

Yes that was the case until last December, the P legistlation was England and Wales up till then
When part P was dreamed up by some moron the legistlation applied to both
Since December, any changes proposed or made by The Community + local gov department, applies only to England

The review that is taking place at the moment will not automatically come into force in Wales, unless Cardiff decides to do the same, which they are not going to do

Whatever changes are now proposed and made in England in 2013 will not be made in Wales
Our lot will then look at how it works in England and review it, if they see a need

So in essence we are stuck with this garbage part P for many years, without change or much interest in change, what a farce

If a company plans to do work throughout the UK god help them!

In England 1 set of rules and regs, then in Wales another, Scotland yet another, and Northern Ireland yet another! The EU is trying to get everything in the EU harmonized, looks like the UK is fighting back by trying to split it all up more.

I can't see how or why the building regs need to have 4 different sets across the UK. Other than to create a few more public sector jobs it seems a total shambles.

So as I work on the border how the hell is this going to effect me I wonder? Will Elecsa carry on charging me 400 quid a year as I live on the Welsh side and ÂŁ200 to a bloke a couple of Miles away? Will i still have to notify jobs in Wales that I dont have to in England? Will I be assessed every year and the sparky on otherside of Offas Dyke every 2 years. Bonkers

Got it in one mate, the ONLY reason the civil service do these things is to justify their own jobs at the expense of us.
