Had similar problem. Found out it was a neon in spur. New build - wasn't expecting that and had undone most of Ring to locate fault. Idiot at wholesalers gave me the spur with neon and lad didn't notice(another plonker). Lost at least an hour of my life as believed 100% it wasn't a neon as i never use them. So annoyed off but also relieved that supposed fault was sorted.:p

If your not installing the circuit, and only testing the circuit why don't you do a LN-E test. OR post results from a L-E / N-E and we can see what they are as well. I'm in agreement with the rest though - Neon in circuit somewhere or load that hasn't been located - Like the wonderful people who spur a PIR off the back of a socket without fusing it down.

I had a N-E fault the other day which turned out to be a faulty cooker switch. Neon was lighting up when testing N-E and L-E even when in the off position.

Thanks Monkey - you might just have helped explain a dodgy test reading i got the other day:D Had forgotten about the outside lights !

HI

i agree could be neon or i suspect you have missed something maybe controlled via switched spur, a few years back i had a similar problem, turned out to be a socket that was installed under the floor for a Tv aerial amplifier, i would look for something connected toring in a odd place.

had a problem with a utility fan being of the ring that gave a bad reading
also if some on has connected up a fused spur wrong and got the load and supply mixed up and neon on all time had that before to

Well that's your job to find out if there is anything interconnected i suppose, never rely on what the customer say's. I would just do a L+N & E if it was taking to long to find it.
I had a job once where the guy said he had never touched the installation. This was a bare faced lie he had done all sorts of things - outside light on ring no fcu, he had wired his shed in singles tie wraped together(was so funny i laughed my head off), had put lots of sockets in the loft for his train set all off the upstairs lighting circuit. The best one was the socket in the computer room- all chopped in nice and neat. The socket was fed back entry by flex to an outside wall, down the wall and into the floodlight on the back garden fed off the permant feed. I asked him who had done all this work then he said it was that long ago he had forgot. Total bull****
