Hi all, new to the forum. Been trying to get up to scratch on as much info of her on various other sights for rewiring a house. I am not a electrician in the trade but I design engineer for a company that deal with power monitor & distribution, I have a good knowledge on electrical wiring etc but not as much on a domestic level.

I am currently renovation a house for rental, the CU is a old Wylex re-wireable. I want to change the CU for one in compliance with new regs 17th Edition.

I have a look at the wiring found at least 1 problem with 2way landing lighting using the live down upstairs and down stairs so will need to sort that.

Basically the upstairs Ring main and lighting is ok (bare above problem) so gonna pretty much leave that as is bare few worn sockets swap outs. But down stairs lighting and downstairs ring main will be all new.

There seems to many contradictions on what you can and can’t do, I’m practical and doing the DIY work myself to save on as much cost as possible. But if I do need to get a Spark in id like to know the correct procedure not to be screwed.

What would be the correct procedure o change this?
Notify power supplier and they come out and fit a 100Amp isolator switch. Then work can be carried out on CU change.
Pull the DNO fuse and wire straight into the CU....yes I have read the thread on safety for pulling these out.. getting face burnt off if they break etc.

The main question is can I do some if any of the wiring work?

Plumber friend said that as long as I get a Spark in to check it all and get a safety Cert then it would be ok? I would need a annual safety check as the property will be rented.

Cheers...

Your trouble is going to be the Part P notification. with the work you have said that needs doing apart from somthing like a bedroom socket change or simular then you will need aproval.

your best bet is to chat to a local sparks and see what he says. you may find the cost for him to do it is less than you doing it and having to notify it..
Also phone around theres lots of us out there that aint in the job to rip people off, and we dont all charge the earth and advice dont cost a penny.

Look up part P
a start for you is here...

if you post your location, a member may be close to you and can pop round . you could do all the work yourself by first notifying building control and paying them around ÂŁ300. they will then inspect and test ( usually subbed out to a part p scheme member ). and issue your completion cert.

Cheers guys.. wasn’t implying that trades people are out there to rip me off but I like to know the correct ways to do things and how to go about them.

That’s what I was hoping for, My uncle who is a plumber and will be doing the pluming side there said he has a mate who will come in and test it and pass it all after it all been installed etc. But wanted to check that this was ok to do. If it was my house I wouldn’t be so worries but as I’m renting I want to try do it all by the book not to land up in front of the nice man with a wig and gown.

When do you notify building control? Do I do it before I start and they come out and inspect? Or it is a case the sparky will notify then when doing the checks etc?

sorry for the rip people off comment,,I added that as soooo many people think a trade person is going to be more expensive, didnt try imply you thought that...
If you use a registered electrician and work with him then he will do all the paperwork and inform building control. normaly after completion. If you are to carry out the work then everything you do will need to be looked at including your preposed plan so will need to be informed before you start.. thats my reading of it anyway :)

Edit.. BE very carfull of doing the work and getting someone else to sign it off,, this goes against all governing bodies and can open a can of worms..

The sparky is not really supposed to sign off/notify other peoples work in this way and would get thrown off his scheme if it came to light
He would only be permitted to test and inspect your work and sign a 3 part electrical installation certificate that you sign as designer and installer which would still need to be notified to Labc

If he is ok to adopt the work as is own install, then its a fiddle of good value to yourself and foolish of him to do so,but needs be and well done if he can do you this favour, because the alternative is a costly mess involving the council with electrical installation inspection
If he will sign it off, then go for it,but do so quietly without announcing the work to the jobsworths at the council

No worries was my wording by screwed meant if it done it all then the sparky came in a said I’m not touching that then I’d be in a right pickle.

He is a fully registered and qualified etc sparky. I’ll be getting in contact before doing anything there, im just getting my head round all the correct ways and regs to install etc before he comes round so not trying to take in one hit. Ill won’t be covering anything up until it’s all checked and passed.
