Ive been asked to change the consumer unit at a mates house and not done a change over for 2 years, what cert should i fill out?? i had a feeling its a full installation one as changing the c/u makes the whole installation my responsibility?? any help would be great or tips on "grey areas" in this sparky world :)

you would require a new electrical installation certificate as well as carrying out a periodic inspection report which would include your schedule of inspections and test results

Yes an EIC will be required.
However changing the CU does not then mean that any of the existing installation becomes your responsibillity.
The only time an existing installation becomes your responsibillity, is when inspecting and testing, and that responsibillity ends when you have concluded your testing.

Widdler, Any Spark worth his salt will carry out a PIR on completion of a consumer unit changeover,

Think it's a clever thing before undertaking the change as you can identify any faults that would crop up before commencing, if the customer is happy to foot the bill for your time and effort doing it, know a few who do this. However it's not a necessary.

Agree with Simplesimon it would be good to do a PIR first to ID any faults etc but its always down to cost.
Both the schedules are filled in along with the EIC during a CU change and any faults found the customer is aware that that is extra on top of the CU change price to put them right thats how I do it anyhow.

Widdler, Any Spark worth his salt will carry out a PIR on completion of a consumer unit changeover,

Really?

On what grounds?

An EIC should be issued upon completion, but as for a PIR? Beyond basic safe functionality - e.g. that there are no shorts, that there is a cpc, who's going to do a full PIR if not requested?

Are you seriously suggesting that you give hours of additional labour away on top of the cost of a CU change, or that you charge the additional say three hours on top - making yourself probably very uncompetitive in the area you work in?

Dear all, please find useful link below covering all the ESC guides. A PIR is carried out prior to changing a consumer unit, as others have stated, this eleminates or highlights any faults which you are then responsible for. Its always awkward to convince the customer after youv'e changed the board that there was a fault.regards piccollo
