Wrong.

Been on to the tech guys of my part p scheme, and they say that if it's a like for like change, and I prove that supplementary bonding is present (which it is as I put it in) then there is no requirement for an RCD to be installed, and it can be certified on a Minor Works Certificate.

Cheers guys for all your thoughts and debate. I would like to say that I would always install an RCD if I had my way:rolleyes:.

what scheme are you with

If your on a scheme then you are required to use a minor works and as manufacturers instructions over ride regs it looks like RCD is required.

i dont know about you guys but have you seen how many showers are out there in hotels,b & b s and the like who still run showers off of re-wirables etc,it is a hard job trying to tell them they do need to upgrade,if you done a periodic and pointed out what was not to current standard then it is an observation, they do not HAVE to do so,the regs should be a bit more clearer to the client, they understand gas safe or corgi but not standards of electrical wiring,if it was to the old standard than i would note it on the minor works, and recommend bringing it up to 17th edition, the client must be an exception,as long as you have written copy of your assesment, then you have fulfilled your legal obligations,if a gas engineer said your boiler needs a new gas valve, thats 300 quid, they would not argue would they? anyway i would defo fit rcd.

The problem is perceived risk; unless the customer has had direct experience of a loved one (or themselves) getting hurt, then ignorance is bliss.

With gas you can smell it & the affects of something going wrong is there for all to see (especially if a boiler blows up), and frightens people because they themselves could be caught up in an explosion.
Consideration for the fact that dodgy electrics could cause a fire never enters their head, besides they will find someone else to blame.
The above attitude is selfish and uninformed but the scheme providers and our government don't have any desire to educate the population, the NIC's response to Shaggs enquiry is a case in point. We all know that the manufacturers instructions override the (non-mandatory) IEE regs so why didn't the tech state this first? I bet on another day with a different tech the answer would be different, so what chance have we got?

In the event of an accident its in breach of current regs and the manufacturers instructions the electrician will have no chance in court and the tech advisors would deny all knowledge of any such advice given. If its one thing I have learned in life its to pot with everyone else cover your own back everytime.

Well said and one to hold vigilantly in mind especially as it can be so easy for some to forget when its job or no job.

Hi guys did the job today and after all your input I installed an RCD unit as I see where your coming from about coving your own back side. So cheers everyone :D
