Hi All
took lad on last year, let accountant know, paid £30.00 per day which basically gave him min wage at his age.
but what i did not realize was that from day one he was earning holiday it was when accountant sent me an email about 3 months later saying he had so many days.
f..k me i thought he is better off than me paid holiday.

anyway still with me, but you will need to pay about £30 a day & don't forget he will accumulate holiday, another £10 per day if you want to get your money back, so break even point without insurances £40.00, his worth jack s..t for about a year or if you have the one i have 1.5 years.

do it all above board because if anything does happen it can get very serious very quick.

Thanks marc8, ill see how it pans out over the next couple of weeks on a casual basis, but in September he will only be able to do 2 days a week, so will probably sort something better for then.

i,m not sure if you do need to stop CIS, as his earnings will be below the tax/NI threshold.
If you employ anyone a monthly return needs to be carried out and on time or you will get a 100 pound fine, I agree there will be no stopages but a return must be carried out regardless of any moneys changing hands between an employer and HMRC.

Is it not possible to take him on as an apprentice, I may be wrong( which according to mrs Gmes is quite often) it won't cost much a week and he gets all is funding, plus you then get him for 4 days a week, win win all round.

When I took lad on he mentioned apprentice word & I had been down this route before to break even you need to charge quite a lot, government pays for books & college, you have to pay the day off & insurance + assessment days.
Cost to me to break even was over £5.00 per hour.
1st year they are only to observe as well this is all laid out by the college no hands on work for 1 year.
Way I did it said to lad if you are serious out yourself through training 1day week & work for the rest, from day nor he can be on the tools no extra day to pay for & if he picks it up I can up his money if doesn't pick up no extra money.
