You talking about ''wave form'' armouring?? Those steel tape cables were a REAL bugger to terminate ... lol!!!

Ive never terminated a steel tape armour cable, and i hope i never have to. No, these cables were bitumin covered, steel wire armoured, with a lead sheath over the inner paper cores. I know what wave armouring is, as its now used in the UK as the prime means of supplying power upto roughly 600a (In the UK power area anyway). I think its called Wavecon, and it is ali core, copper armour.

with whats at stake, i would certainly be charging a more than what my normal rate would be. If a mistake is made on cables that large, you might as well start throwing your money in a pit!

And no ive not made mistakes like that. Yet!

Well as the OP finaly revealed its a periodic inspection , we can record this visual abnormality in the observations section with a tick in the " further investigation" box.
no point being late home for tea ;-)

Some older lead sheathed paper insulated cables had bitumen coatings for bedding of the armourings,it was always soft and runny when made off.perhaps in this case its may not be overloading

Been a dammed long time since i made my last one off too. And that was a double tape armoured cable. Gave far superior protection to the cable, but one hell of a job to terminate, especially the bigger 4 core cables... Yes i think your right about them being called ''Wavecon'' , i knew there was a name for them but couldn't place it...lol!!

Don't know what they use now, but the wavecon type cables we had at the company where i did my training were all copper conductors and i'm pretty sure were all steel armouring. Most had been in service, since the various factories were built, but quite a few were extended or split over the years. I can only remember one of our smaller factory units having any cables that had Aluminium cores, don't think they lasted that long, before being replaced during a re-vamp of the building....

Also good for cutting strands of cable armour, although I try to restrict their use to copper.

I would imagine by not being able to identify what earth lead applies to what circuit, unless each earth lead is identified/labelled.
