hello I have recently left college with a Level 3 Electrotechnical Technology diploma at grade PASS. I have about 5months experience on site working as an apprentice but I really want to work on new build properties only due to my fear of asbestos. any advice on me getting onto new build and will I need to enhance my electrical qualifications or will a level 3 do it?? thanks!!

Just referring back to the OP.

To be able to pick and choose what to work on is everyone’s dream. His services must be in great demand if he can dictate what he will work on. For some reason I really can’t see a trainee falling in to the category of a specialist.

There’s also experience to take in to account, the wider the range of work undertaken the better the tradesman’s chances of employment.

Personally I’m of the opinion our OP has chosen the wrong line of work and is looking for an excuse to get out. It would be the best thing he could do.

I agree mate, perhaps the OP needs to get some cotton wool to wrap himself in.

I totally agree with tony here, i work on building sites and if you think it is connecting in pretty wires all day your wrong !!!
If chasing in walls, cutting in boxes, drilling holes, installing containment, traipsing around in mud, and having to deal with ------- foreigners and site agents all day aint your thing then site work aint for you.
Also the majority of firms now have all there work on a price so by your attitude you wont earn a great deal anyway !!!

the only way to make money on pricework is to do it quick.

they will try every trick in the book not to pay the full amount

I have a worry about northerners invading essex

in your dreams, essex boy. why should we bring our advanced culture and technology to somewhere it takes a man more than 5 minutes to decide whether to have a cocktail or a girly lager? :smilielol5::smilielol5::smilielol5::smilielol5:

Just wondering if i can get some work where its nice and cool on workdays and then warm but not too hot when ive got some time off ? No dust, no nasty ladders, all sockets at chest level (Oh my poor knees). any ideas....Oh forgot to mention im bit scared of lectrics.

You mean somewhere you can sit next to the pool on your day off with a cold glass of continental lager or Sangria, turn to the wife every few minutes and say "this is the life. Yep, best decision we ever made, moving out here"?

Newsflash! You're not a northerner, close but not close enough.

Found the solution to our OP’s problem.

So if your scared of asbestos, will you hate me if i tell you you are probably breathing levels of it in when you walk down the street on a daily basis?

Get on a course and use some common sense. Its really not scary stuff and will only do you damage if your complacent and think it can't hurt you. Its not going to jump out at you and hurt you when your not looking but its also not something to just ignore.

I've been thinking about this and I've made a decision, I only want to work in places where all forms of containment come premade and assembled because I'm a bit scared of getting cuts, I'd like all cables to be pulled in for me because blisters can really hurt.
I don't want to be making any more SWA off because those hacksaws are dangerous and pyro is out of the question from now on because we all know how sharp it gets when you're stripping it.
All terminations must be made as I get bored easily and we can forget testing because, well it's just a chore.
I can't be doing with intruder alarm work either because those tiny little cables are fiddly.
Now, who would like to employ me

Perhaps the OP needs to get a girlie type job, you know hairdresser, oh sorry all the fumes from sprays, no disrespect to all our lady leckies intended
