What kinds of jobs is an Ancillary Operative card good for?

I have worked as an electrician for over 7 years in my native Tunisia. I have a degree from a university there which was evaluated at NVQ 3 - 4 by NARIC. I have 17th Edition wiring, and the Health & Safety. I applied for a Gold ECS Electrical Installer card and got this instead.

What can I do with this?

I was hoping to open my own business doing residential electrical work.

If you have qualifications that are comparable to the UK NVQ3 for Electroctechnical installation then this may, after some effort by you, be recognised.
It looks like they have not currently accepted your qualifications.

Ancillary Operatives
If operatives do not meet the technical or vocational standards to quality for a skilled ECS card (and are not apprentices or trainees), the scheme provides a white card with a brown stripe.

Even though you have the NARIC comparison JIB / ECS do not accept this as suitable if you read their frequently asked questions here they give details of how to approach non UK qualifications and get yourself assessed.

If you have the current 17th edition qualification then the self certification schemes would likely accept you onto their scheme and permit you to notify building control of your notifiable work at a lower cost than direct notification, which would then permit a valid business model for residential electrical work.

Thank you for replying. ECS wanted over 700 Pounds to assess the qualifications, this is after they instructed me to have it evaluated by NARIC at a cost of over 100 Pounds. I didn't and don't have that money. That's a LOT of money to spend on getting qualifications evaluated. The problem is that none of their customer service reps are consistent. Everytime you finish one qualification, they add something else. It's like the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing there and all the conflicting information makes it problematic and overly expensive. I am not originally from the UK and therefore am not familiar with the education system here so have no clue whatsoever what some of the things they are asking for are.

Anyway, forget that for a moment. Can you tell me where to find information or how to get on one of those "self certification schemes"? I passed the 17th edition about a month ago and the Health and Safety about a week after, so everything is current.

I am so peeved that they didn't give me a Gold card. I have worked in the construction industry in Malta doing jobs alone, as well as in my native Tunisia. I sent letters from my former employer in Tunisia stating clearly that I worked as a supervisor there. Plus the evaluation from NARIC which clearly states I have more than the required qualification to work as an electrician. There is no reason for them not to give me the Gold card. It's truly disheartening.

Think yourself lucky that you can work legitimately in the UK with just the 17th edition under your belt, because i can assure you that you wouldn't be allowed that privilege in any other European country, or in Australia or New Zealand. ...In fact i can't think of ANY country with a defined recognised education/training route for electricians that would allow you to work as an electrician, without your present qualifications being adjudicated as being equivalent to that countries minimum recognised standard. That probably also includes your country (Tunisia) too.....

The JIB /ECS are a law unto themselves as regards card issuing, do not worry too much about it, having the ancillary operative card would get you access to most construction sites and if you showed them your Tunisian qualifications and the NARIC mapping then you would probably be permitted to work as an electrician, however as you are not intending to work on construction sites or on government contracts this does not apply.

This is the details of the competent person schemes, they are only there to permit you to self certify compliance with the building regulations where this is required as specified in the approved document part P, (and possibly do some safety awareness but this is not noticeable.)
Their registration fees are about ÂŁ4-500, sorry.

hello my name is Adrian.
I need some info regarding my job experience in romania and italy.
I have a three years experience in romania as electrician in overhead power lines of 20 kv,assemblies ,(test and maintenance)of high voltage power cabins.
In Italy 7 years always as electrician for domestic and commercial electrical installations.
I made two domestic electrical installations with home automation ..
I have send my vocational traning degree to naric for conversion to uk standard's and I found that my qualification is an EVQ3.
In two words I am a fully skilled electrician.
My question is:why the JIB doesn't recognize my experience?I have all the papers translated and certified proof.
I have applied for an ECS electrician card pass the exam and I received an ancillary operative card.
Can I get a job as an electrician with this card?

Thank's in advance

Adrian, your best bet would be to ring the JIB and ask them the question mate.
You will be able to get work with the card you have but will it be the kind of work you want? That's debatable.
