re some uncomplementry posts basically saying 'get a spark in' what is a spark, being a spark covers alot of things from fitting a light to fitting pylons, were all sparks with different skills and different ways of doing things so respect should be shown to all,
i served my time in controls doing things like bms, production lines, marine control systems and some industrial jobs,im a jib spark but would struggle on doing a full house rewire, weve all got something to share and help one another what ever the expierenece we hold..lets not get like other forums,no one likes a gob*****

were not the royalty of trades for nothing:cool:

get a lot of - ive just changed a fusebox now nothing works,
are you a electrician - oh yes
did you test before change - oh no

one of the many attributes a working sparky has is to know his limits and the dangers of working with electricity for himself and the client.
yes sparks can work in various sectors, but they wouldnt be stupid enough to work on something they have no knowledge of without prior learning or understanding.

I'm trying to understand how somebody qualifies as an electrician with out covering however briefly the theoretical side if not the practical of all areas of electrical installation

I don't recall any limitations on my qualifications ie domestic or industrial and while I served my apprenticeship on industrial sites my college course gave me sufficient knowledge to do domestic installation work

BS 7671 covers all electrical installations we all work to it

And last of all some food for thought if we had no internet at all in our lives where would these people that ask these possibly stupid questions ask them as this forum would not be here to ask those questions

the way i see it, an "Electrician" is someone who has the competence to do the works to which he is carrying out. now competence can be backed up with training , hands on experience and qualifications. there are that many different routes an electrician can go down. I may be no good with control systems or motors but that does not mean i can`t re-wire a house or do commercial jobs with great ability. i may also be able to set a nice set of lights up in a night club but i may not be too good with alarms. The basics we all have as electricians then the areas we work in follow after. for instance would you let a plastic surgeon do your heart transplant? I think not, but it does not mean he is not a Surgeon.

Probably the best analogy yet

Agree...a good summing up........but perhaps it would be a good idea if those who claim to be an electrician ,but are asking for advice on how to wire a light ,would give a bit of an explanation as to why they are asking for seemingly basic info...they may get a more sympathetic response.

Ever filled in the form for a JIB card? They have quite a scope on what an electrician is, a lot of different disciplines. I struggle every renewal time to figure what box to tick.

An electrician to the general public is, imo, always going to be someone that can do electrical work on their house.

I'm all for supporting other sparkies in the trade no matter what their own dedicated skill set and specialist area, however thinking back to a thread a couple of weeks ago about how we need to be careful about what advice we give as like people have said, some people let's say the Overkeen DIYers have come on and asked basic questions about say a light switch or a light fitting replacement which should be basic knowledge to anybody who is half qualified.

i think the problem is alot of guys are being forced to take on jobs which are outside there specialised areas to keep there head afloat. if it was a choice between going bust or having to ask what might seem a stupid question to get a little clarity and confidence on the job i know what i would do.

Sparking is so messed up atm imo. Does a normal plumber take on gas work...nope, never. Not legally anyway.

Does a car spark or Joe from down the road tackle some electrics in Mrs Green's house - yes! Sure the likes of B&Q show you how anyway and they sell all the parts, not rocket science eh. Only mugs like us trained for a few years, then did 17th edition, 2391 etc etc. Should have just gone to B&Q.

Never a truer word said!
