What is flash testing?

hi guys looking at getting a pat tester and was wondering what the flash testing function was for? Dont mean to be a doyle here but not sure what they were referring to it seems to add about £300.00 on the price of the decent testers

Hi dielectric strength testing (also known as flash or hi-pot testing) is not normaly carried out during in-service testing.
Dielectric strength testing is carried out by the manufacturer on a complete appliance after assembly.

The testing should only be performed where it will not weaken insulation or create a hazard.

from my understanding is when you put a huge current into the unit and check to see if any gets to the outer casing on class 2 and reinfored insulation appliances. Its more after a repair not everday pat testing.

Thanks lads you guys are tops
Dont think i will worry about that function then as wont be doing major component rebuilds as its not cost effective just change the part i have found

If you test 110V portable tools that are double insulated, I think you might need it. Worth checking that out first.
