Has anyone come across this set up before, one piece of switchgear, next to a time clock of some sort, its part of a three phase supply too night storage heaters in a standard three bed detached house. (i was suprised to find a three phase system) Never come across one before. Can anyone help?. IMG_0102.jpg3 Phase what.jpgpossible transformer.jpg

I would guess that it is a contactor, which is controlled by the time clock, and it controls the feed for the storage heaters. As it is labelled caution 415 volts I would guess that it may have been an alternative to the DNO supplying a timeclock which would probably have not been suitable for three phase.

I don't think this is a 3 phase supply/system at all...

Hi Engineer54 , why do you say that ?
Admittedly not that common to have 3 phase in a domestic but not un heard of .
Obviously a 230v coil ran from the sangimo but it could be a separate phase per way .
You seemed so sure , was just wondering if i had missed something ?

To provide the answer you are looking look you need to provide more information than just a picture of a time clock and contactor!!!!!

Electric heating has no diversity so if there are a lot of heaters then 3 phase can be common for a large load. I guess the time clock is controling the contactor coil

I have seen a E7 tariff at the origin and this kind of arrangement at at remote part which is feed by a 24hr sub-main the 24hr supply time clock bring the storage heaters on at the time of off peak

Let have more detail

Well, to kick off, The old Leccy boards, didn't generally supply a standard domestic 3 bed house, with a 3 phase supply. That Sangamo time clock, is not the type that would be used on such a 3 phase system.... Not saying that i'm 110% certain, just that you don't' have 3 phase brought into a house just for storage heaters. This set-up could be controlling three to six single phase heaters, depending on heater KW ratings....

As NMc suggests , ...really need some more photo's especially of the DNO incomer cut out head!!

The Type and No. identification panels of the contactor have filled in by hand, presumably by the original installer. No. section clearly reads 240V, 30A.

It was quite normal in those days, to hand write identifications panels .... As you can notice on this cover, the spaces allowed is quite large... Though in this case, it was probably filled by a third party rather than at the factory. ....Handwriting's not up to scratch!! lol!!!
