Hi,

I am a trained sparky, so use BS7671 as my rulebook, but a new job has me confused.

We build commercial ovens, where do I get the regs on how to wire them?

I know this is a bit of a specific question, but trust me I have done a TON of research and am no further forwards!

So to clarriy, I am designing and building custom ovens including all the internal wiring and electronics.

What set of regs do I need to abide by?

If anyone knows at least who I should be asking at least that would be great!

Thanks, the help is appreciated!

There are a ton of standards, you should however be working to the designers drawings which should be done to the required standards.
Depending on how they are classified, then BS EN 60204-1 could be one standard, another would be BS EN 61140, another could be BS EN 60335, another could be BS5733.
The rest depends on the detail design.

I have just read that you are the design engineer?

You really need to be careful at this stage as your employer must know the standards that they are required to work to.

Check the "Declaration of Conformity" or the "Certificate of Incorporation" for the ovens and the standards must be listed on that.

There is no easy answer as it will depend on the detail design and the application, however the above will give you some ideas, though that lot will approach ÂŁ500 ish to buy.

Thanks for the help.

The designers currently do all the drawings and ensure all regs compliance apart from electrical; which is left to our team.
I am just worried we are using the wrong regs to be compliant. It is not a safety concern as everything is MASSIVELY overbuilt.

I am due to assist in the R&D and new product so want to know what rules I am supposed to be complying with.

We build large counters for the likes of morrisons. Those huge counters that have hot cupboards, cold cupboards, microwaves and ovens all built in. We build all of that up from scratch.

60204 was the closest I spotted before, but on closer inspection (on the description of the book) it mentioned the regs take over after the device is wired. The other designers do that, I just need to make sure I am rating the wires and meeting standards on bonds correctly.

BS7671 will apply to the wiring to the supply inlet of your equipment.

Your equipment will need to be wired to say 60204 internally and that is what this standard covers, the internal wiring of machinery type panels etc.

There will be other standards though that concern you.
You need to go on the BSI website and start looking for possible standards and those then cross referenced from them, which is in the free short form information.
Once you have a few ideas then you will need to buy the standards and then undertake a further deeper cross referencing to obtain all of those you require.
Remember if you are not in possession of the standard and an incident occurs then in a court of law you will be defaulted to having not worked to the required standard.
You cannot have done this as you did not have possession of the standard to know what to work to, if that makes sense.
Also if your company has iso9001 etc. then for this you must carry all of the standards to which you work.
Also you MUST know the relevant standards to complete the CE marking on your product in conformance with the LVD.
