Just had the sparks round to connect my boiler after it was fitted 3 weeks ago.I did offer to connect it myself but was told no,as I may get it wrong!Anyway listen to this, spark aged about 22 turns up with apprentice he proceeds to unscrew fused spur at which point I mention isolation."Its ok it,s fed from immersion circuit" came the reply "no it,s on the ring shall I knock it off?" "ok" says spark, after telling him its off he disconnects wires (no test for dead) so I asks apprentice what the spark has done wrong "nothing" came the reply "what about testing it,s dead?" at which point he waves voltstick over cables. He then connects a 5 core flex to the LNE at spur and the other cores to stat cable, connects them into boiler powers up and all done. After suggesting he actually tests to see if stat works he finds it doesnt,he then opens boiler to reveal he had not connected the return live from stat as he was not shown where to connect it!I produced wiring diagram and showed him where to connect stat to which is 24 volt,we now have a 5 core flex carrying mains voltage and 24v DC in same flex. When I asked him about this and pointed out it was against regs his reply was "well thats how we got told to wire it! Needless to say he didn,t do any earth test afterwards. And they said I may get it wrong!

its the pressure that is put on these people to 'get the 'job done' a no matter the costs. I wouldnt be surprised if his boss is a facilitator that has no clue about electricity at work.....a sad thought

Wow, I hope I never have to work in your house. I work live all the time and always use a volt stick to prove isolation.
Worked in a school the other day, had to connect a 16mm SWA into a big 3phase DB.
"So you're gonna shut the whole building down" says the caretaker....
"Nope"
"Well you're not allowed to work live"
"Im not going to"
"So you're gonna shut this whole board off before you open it then?"
"Nope"
"Can you explain how you do that without working live, I'm just a layman"
"Exactly, I know what im doing, you don't"

He gave up after that

Its my frickin life, if I wanna risk it, im blardy well gunna!

REG 14 of the EAWR springs to mind for a start.

unfortunately the house is owned by the local authority so it,s their sparks, the point I was making about safe isolation was that A)the EAWR regarding live working B) you never take anyone elses word that the supply is dead test it yourself.C)I dont consider his methods as setting a good example to his apprentice. Yes I,ve worked live but never in a domestic job in front of a client where there was no need to do so.His whole way of working has left me with a severe lack of confidence in their staff.
