Hi all

I'm having an issue with the management at my company, we have removed an electrician from duties due to several failings within their work.
They know want me to have him complete defined scope works only, spurs mainly for ventilation equipment. My argument is that do to his failings ( earthing issues and insulation testing being the main two) he can't complete this but they are know wanting prof that as a defined scope electrician what he would need to know. I've googled and failed to find any reference to this area, any help? Thanks

I'm sorry but this just beggars belief.

You have a barely trained monkey who hasn't got a clue there Colly. Because it seems that the management are also monkeys maybe you should tell them that this one needs to be gotten rid of.

Defined scope was brought in (mistakenly imho) so that gas fitters could connect boilers to a spur or kitchen fitters could do little bits and bobs. It was NOT brought in to give penny pinching management teams a reason not to hire properly competent people.

trev!.......i got just past the

"barely trained monkey"

bit before i realized you were not referring to me,..ha!....i thought my comment, coming from a trainee had infuriated the trev-meister!....

managers tho!!,...iv worked in a variety of professions, and they are always the same....penny pinching, and often new to the type of job / field,...but,...BUT,...THEY KNOW BETTER!!!

No Nath that was absolutely not directed at you mate. It boils my wee that companies will employ these clowns to play with something that can, will and does kill people yet continue to use them. Then when things go wrong because of their incompetence they haven't got enough savvy to realise that they're putting people in danger.
I couldn't go to the dentists and tell him that I passed an open book dentistry exam after a few hours in a classroom so he/she should give me a job pulling teeth. I'd get laughed at.

Doesn't sound like you, management or the electricians know what they're talking about...

What should a defined scope electrician know?

1/ they are not electricians
2/ they should not work without supervision
3/ they are a none entity that electricians don’t need
4/ they are employed by unscrupulous people
5/ they are a danger to the public at large

There’s more but dinner is calling me.

So the relevant questions are:

1. Is your company a scheme member?
2. How many "sparks" do they employ?
3. Do you have a QS?
4. Do YOU feel competent to do the work you are being asked to do unsupervised?

Murdoch, yes with Elecsa and Napit, 5 sparks employed and I'm the QS. This is why I'm not happy with the situation, I have half the board on my side saying he shouldn't be completing any electrical duties until his standard of work is addressed but the other half saying no let him get on with part scope.

Between attitude, ability and knowledge im against it. I need to prove via a third party that he should be at a particular level even for part scope, so that I can get arrangements in place to help him. I don't believe in just throwing individuals out the door, or letting them loose on their own in individuals homes to cause a death or anything else.

A chat with both bodies tomorrow to see if they can provide a list of minimum areas of knowledge for competency, rather than just me saying they should know it all etc.

Oh dear. Don't envy you being the QS on that firm. Is your name on any of his work....?
