Hi all

I'm having an issue with the management at my company, we have removed an electrician from duties due to several failings within their work.
They know want me to have him complete defined scope works only, spurs mainly for ventilation equipment. My argument is that do to his failings ( earthing issues and insulation testing being the main two) he can't complete this but they are know wanting prof that as a defined scope electrician what he would need to know. I've googled and failed to find any reference to this area, any help? Thanks

whats a "defined scope" electrician?

oh, sorry...silly me...its the name the scams give for spur connector uppers...

You're potentially into difficult employment law territory here if he were to be sacked as you'd probably have to prove that he was both dangerous, and incapable of being given additional training to make him competent / given alternative duties.

If it's handled wrong then the company would probably lose at a tribunal, which will probably be why the company are trying to find him alternative duties.

Could he work as an electricians mate or something until you're more confident in him, or do all the sparks work on their own? If his nose is put out of joint by doing this, he might leave anyway which would solve the issue.

Gavin, obviously we're not lawyers but I'd be willing to bet there's a clause in this clown's employment contract something along the lines of "Using skill and dilligence"
If not the company deserve all they get but either way he should not be working or ever have been working unsupervised.

As QS he could certainly refuse to co-sign any more work.

Murdoch, yes with Elecsa and Napit, 5 sparks employed and I'm the QS. This is why I'm not happy with the situation, I have half the board on my side saying he shouldn't be completing any electrical duties until his standard of work is addressed but the other half saying no let him get on with part scope.......
......A chat with both bodies tomorrow to see if they can provide a list of minimum areas of knowledge for competency, rather than just me saying they should know it all etc.

What I posted before is from Napit website, are they competent to carry out the work of an electrician? Does not sound like it, lets see what the schemes say???

The problem is that the schemes are designed to make a select few very rich, like most things in a capatilist society, nothing to do with electrical safety and compitence, as far as I'm concerned it should have stayed as 236 parts 1 and 2 and a 5 year appreticeship, it gives you the chance to learn from the old boys and experience good and bad practice.
