I've completed my 2330, level 3 log book and passed my AM2, im to have a meeting next week with my gaffers about where things are going in my career with the company im with.

I've had abit of insider news that due to the economical crisis im only going to be offered the position of an electrical improver with a wage of around £8.50 per hour.

With completing all my apprentiship and having 4 1.2 years in the game im not too sure if its the right offer for me as now im an electrician i'd much rather have the title that will suit my jib card and the wage to suit, there not offering to pay for my 17th ed anytime soon and theres been no mention of testing and inspecting.

Really all im asking is for ur opinions and thoughts on all this and what im best off doing to further my career with regards accepting or looking elsewhere

Whilst I wouldn't want to advise you to leave a job in the current climate without something lined up, I believe it is completely and utterly wrong - and immoral - for them to treat someone who is entitled to JIB Electrician Grading as an Improver. If they are a JIB firm I would suggest that it is also a breach of the conditions. Perhaps speak to a Union representative.

Best of luck to you.

yeah they are JIB but only when it suits them and yeah i am part of a union so i can have a talk. i'd ideally like to stay given the right circumstancies as i get on well with co-workers, its relativily easy work and the gaffers am ok most the time but im not going to let them treat me like a mug esp when they will probably charge me out at sparks rate

Good man. Speak to your local Unite (Amicus section) representative.

raise the issue yourself they might like it if you show willing. find out how much it costs at you local college they might not find it so expensive. maybe even do it yourself off your own back and in your time while keeping a good eye out for what jobs are available in your area. good luck

From JIB website

12. TRAINING AND QUALIFICATION COSTS
Should an employer require their employees to undertake I.E.E. 17th Edition Regulations training then the costs involved will be met by the employer.
Possible funding avenues will be ascertained and utilized where employees are not required by their employers to undertake I.E.E. 17th Edition Regulations training.

See what they say to this.

Probably best to stay where you are for the moment unless you have something else lined up,lots of JIB firms arent paying the rates at the moment, just hope it gets better soon.
