What wires go where?

Hello,

I joined this forum only a few minutes ago so please excuse me if I've posted this question in the wrong area.

The extractor fan in my bathroom has stopped working and want to replace it with a new one. I removed the cover and there is wiring that I am not familiar with -see image. Obviously it is old wiring in my property, or I have been told. I believe the red wire is live, the blue neutral but have no idea what the white wire is for? I have bought a fan from my local Hombase which requires a three wire connection - see image. What I want to know, judging from the pictures I have attached is:

1. Is the Hombase fan suitable for the job.
2. If the I have the blue & red wires correct, what is the white one for.

I am sure you all realise that I am not an electrician but I would very much appreciate your help and advice all the same.

P.S. One thing I know I have got right is, the old fan is 4" and so is the new replacement.

Red White and Blue three core cable suggests the installation is indeed very old,it was used in my distant past before 2 subsequent changes to wiring colours has taken place

You are advised to employ the services of an electrician

Thank you for taking the time to reply but I would sooner have a go myself. If I know what the three wires are for sure, it should be reasonably easy, I would hope.

looking at pic.2. it's not red/white/blue/ it.s brown/grey/blue. it's a simple job for a sparks to connect. only cost a call-out fee. it's not just a matter of connecting. it needs the cores identifying and connecting correctly. there will be live, switched live, and neutral

It ain't a DIY job Miss Sparks. Get a spark in to do the job, it won't cost the earth, and after all, that's what we're here for!

Looks like RED White and blue to me Old 3 phase colours as Dec 56 says

That's exactly why I thought I would come on this forum. If I was rewiring my home I would be in complete agreement about getting a fully qualified electrician in to do the work, and next year it looks like I might have to as I want to rent my property. However, on this occasion I want to do it myself, I can put a fuse in a plug and even changed a plug ...this cant be much harder.

The problem is miss sparkes it all seems very easy but so much could go wrong no electrician can tell you what wires go were by just looking at the colours the cables need to be tested. The best advice is to get a qualified electricain
