Evening all, need your opinions on something.

Basically I was employed on a day rate by another electrician. Im NICEIC registered so employer passed me the odd periodic inspection here and there which bulked up my earnings which was nice.

In the time working for him we started a bigish job which he said will need certifying on completion. I was there for all of the 1st fix period and saw everything go in. All of a sudden I had my own jobs come in and i decided to put them priority as I could earn more money.

I did a bit of second fix but the majority was done by about 4 other sparks. Now the job is finished and the guv is asking me to certify it.

I Did a test of install and it came up ok except for some small problems which i put right.

Now im thinking why should i give install cert as i wasnt there for whole install and theres a few things im not happy with like shaver points over bath room basin and even on top of bath tub.

The consumer unit is also located in a small room with the gas boiler and incoming water supply and there is a strong smell of gas in there.... eek

What would you do in this situation.

it is hard to walk away from money in this economic climate
i suppose you could do an instilation cert for a weeks wages then go in and repair it all. explain to him that no one will do it so go for the pir

Egg - think about it this way. The builder is stuck, he's not got a certificate. The firm that did the work can't give him one (which ultimately involves you). So, what's he going to do? He's going to enlist a different contractor, explain to them that he's got this problem, and how can they help. Ultimately, SOMEBODY is going to have to go in and sort the mess out and do what they feel is appropriate in the situation. Why shouldn't it be you, rather than somebody?

You've got to ask yourself this...

If you have found signs of poor installation methods having been carried out in accessible areas, what on earth are the inaccessible areas like?
What other short cuts have they taken that you might very well never find? Its all very well people saying 'go in put it right', but you have to know what needs putting right in order to be able to do that, and if there are numerous examples of bad/unsafe practice, then there is no guarantee that you will find them all.

Go with your gut feeling.

On large jobs, it is common to have even hundreds of sparks over the course of the work.
With these types of jobs, a 3 part EIC is issued.
The person responsible for the design signs, the person responsible for the construction signs and you as the inspector signs.
Just issue a 3 part EIC, and allow the bulder to sort out who's going to sign for design and construction.
