Evening guys, im looking for a little bit of advice and guidance for my current situation please

I currently work full time as a trainee electrician, and have had this job for the past 6 weeks while studying my 2365 level 2 at college on evenings

what I would like to know, is from your experience with trainees, what would you expect from somebody at my stage of training ? And at what rate would you expect the trainee to be progressing with jobs they are able to do ?

I always try my best, and at the minute my jobs are basically sweeping up and carrying tools, which im fine with

I just want to make sure im doing everything I can to make it worth his while having me as a trainee

Thanks very much

Matthew

Evening again guys

Well today i had some bad news, my wage is going down by ÂŁ25 a week

He says the reason for this is due to one of the companies he does work for, who are on 90 day payment terms, going bust

He made it clear he didnt want to get shut of me, but he has to make some changes

Im 26 and have bills to pay

He was currently giving me ÂŁ200 per week / ÂŁ40 per day, now going down to ÂŁ175 per week / ÂŁ35 per day

Arrrghh ! What a crap day !

Isn't that less than the minimum wage?...

You may be a trainee but at 26 you must be at National minimum wage AFAIK..

apply to hmrc for working tax credit. this can give you around ÂŁ50/week.

If through books it would be a huge struggle to pay bills, travel and pay for college course on that wage, if he's traveling 1 hr each way each day that's a chunk of it gone already, never mind buying tools and college stuff
So if it's through the books u should be getting min wage, something like ÂŁ6.25 per hour or maybe it's more now

Cheers for the replies guys

All has been going well and since posting, on 2 occasions ive now been left on my own for half a day to carry out certain jobs ( plastic conduit work, wiring domestic smoke alarms, routing cables etc...)

In a way im happy hes leaving me on my own as it shows he has a bit of trust in me, but on the other hand i cant stop thinking im been taken for a bit of a mug on ÂŁ35 a day

im just trying to concentrate on the end result haha !

Thanks very much

Exactly the same here mate, as soon as im booked for am2 im ofski.

Spent two days on my own in call centre swaping sensors!!!

no one from firm has been since before those two days and they wont now either

Update cv and send it out a bit, with a bit of experience on there you may get some results if better money and conditions are offered jump ship, it won't get held against you after a pay cut.

Hiya wozz, thanks for the reply mate

Well to be honest its getting a bit worse the last couple of weeks

At the end of the week, im basically getting paid whatever he has in his wallet, and getting told " i will sort the rest with you next week " which is ok but when ive got rent and bills to pay I need a regular income and thats just not happening at the minute

I did mention it to him a few week ago that I needed a full wage at the end of every week but it hasn't changed anything unfortunately

The last week or so, ive also started been left on my own for full days on jobs, basically just drilling and P clipping cable and wiring up LED lights on a warehouse ceiling....which I dont mind, but for ÂŁ35 a day I feel like im getting the p*ss taken out of me a little, or am I asking too much here ?

Im just not sure what I should do as I know how hard it is to get a chance like ive got, its a 1 man band, a mix of domestic, commercial and industrial, and he does take the time to stop and explain things to me which is great..

Decisions decisions lol....

Thanks everyone

This bloke is definitely having your pants down mate, he's also breaking the law by not giving you a written pay statement. You might found that he's not paying tax and NI on you too BUT that isn't your problem.
I think a visit to the citizen's advice bureau is in order followed by a purchase of a lot of ink and paper for all the CVs you'll be sending out.

Thanks guys, looks like ill have to stick with it for now and send some cv's out over the next week and hopefully something will come along

Just seems a shame to throw away a good opportunity but im just in denial that he is definitely taking the mick

He seems to wait until he gets paid off certain jobs before he gives me my wage ( not sure why ) rather than going to the bank or whatever on a friday to get me my wage out, but that can sometimes be 2 weeks which then leaves me in the sh*t

leaving an apprentice on his tod as well....

really poor...

I agree with Trev, from what you say it sounds like there are some problems with your current employment.

It may be he is short of money and waits to get paid in order to pay you, or it may be he is waiting till he is paid in cash so he can pay you under the radar!
It is good that he is explaining things to you and taking time, but leaving you unsupervised, no matter how competent you are, is not a good practice.
Unfortunately there are many different types of people about, one could give him the benefit of the doubt and think he does not realise what he is doing and how much grief it is causing you, but it is easier to assume he is pushing the limits of legality as far as you will allow, and you do not have much control, unfortunately.
It may be worth sitting down with him to discuss the situation with no outside distractions, this may resolve some problems, but only if he is unaware of your current problems.

Try to find somewhere better to work, although you can never know how good the opportunity may be until you are working there, but I wish you good luck in whatever course you choose.

This is exactly what it seems like Richard, he nips into a house, comes out, and " oh theres your wage "

And as Glenn says, im really getting a bit peed off with been left on my own all day while he does whatever he's doing, ive only been in college since september and only with this bloke for a few months

Cheers for the help and advice, I appreciate it

Matthew
