untill now i have somehow managed to get by by getting somebody else on the job to core out holes, or i've borowed a core drill, but it looks like i'm gonna actually have to buy one now!

2 options here, i know someone who just uses a big sds max drill for this, and i know someone with a proper core drill. what is the difference?

also regarding the core bits themselves, you can get expensive ones, or cheap ones. I haven't really weighed it up yet, but someone told me in theory an expensive set is never going to last 4 times as long as the cheap set, and the cheap sets are a quarter of the price?

well the answer to this question is "the marcrist DDM2" why? because i have just ordered one! DDM2 and a 4" and 6" CCU850X cores cost me the best part of £500 but hopefully they will do the job.

a dedicated core drill has the correct gearing (and thus the required torque values) for running cores......
SDS drills dont like cores.....yep they will run cores...but they dont like em....better to get the proper drill....if you intend to do a lot of coring out...(fans, extractor terminals and the like)....its all about justifying the price for such equipment..now, hilti do a good core drill...as do makita..(the best drills you can buy in my opinion)...ryobi do a half decent one......as i have said my preferance for drills is makita .....

the marcrist is an absolute weapon. using the 107mm goes through 4" block in about a minute. yesterday i watched a plumber spend 15 minutes on a 50mm hole, and he did not look to be enjoying himself!
i can't seem to get the hang of it in first gear though, if it jams it just about pulls my arms out of the sockets, in second gear the clutch kicks in and i just un jam it and carry on

Don't mind me while I bump some old threads. Just doing the rounds. Ignore the thread if it's not current topic, it'll soon drop off the list, but if the thread interests you, feel free to reply. :)

We use the DeWalt core drill from screwfix and a set that is about £160 and comes in a little suitcase. Brilliant gear, I used to core holes out wrong but now I do it properly (Use a pilot for 20mm, take it out and core untill through first course and then put extender piece on for second course)
Brilliant core drill use this type myself it also has 2 settings on it for the range of different core bit sizes

There is a decent core set that screwfix do. Comes in a lil nifty box. Titan or something. It's around £50. Then I have a 110v dewalt sds just for coring/chasing. Coring is one of my least favourite jobs. Just make sure to charge accordingly :D
