Afternoon chaps,

Just wondered what the best textbook is for starting out assuming one has no electrical knowledge?

I've bought the 2365 C&G textbook on electrical installations level 2 but it seems a little advanced still?

Is there a popular book which takes it back to basics? I don't want to fall behind at college as some of the theory is quite difficult to grasp? It sort of feels like I've been thrown in the deep end as the tutors put me straight into level 2 as oplosed to level 1?

i did OK with the CAMRA guide to real ale pubs. not only do you get a good pint ( not the girly lager and smoothflow that's advertised on the telly ), but you get to meet some of the older guys whose knowledge is freely shared over a decent pint.

Im in the same situation as you - no prior knowledge, 3rd week level 2 at college.

The book may seem advanced at first, but once you get the basics down it all becomes a lot easier to understand.

There's a lot of information in the book which may feel overwhelming at first, but take your time and learn each section before moving on and you'll be fine. If you get really stuck I'm sure some of the guys here will help you out if you post a question.

Yeah same! The book seems a bit complex... it feels as if there should be a book before the level 2 2365 book to explain things in a more basic manner. I'm not currently working on site either so it's quite hard to understand certain things

Id say the same as Chris , although it might seem a bit daunting, I was in the same boat, once a few terms settle in your head you realise a lot of it looks more complex than it is.

Read the book yourself, not just the classwork and take time reading all the notes on the pages.
I used to note down any word or term I didn't understand then Google them, you'll most likely know/understand more than you think but not the correct terms or names

You'll probably find the 2365 book to be an invaluable resource over the course of your training so don't give up on it just yet! I'd ask my college tutor if I were you because they probably do some sort of level 1 course (they did at my college anyway) so they might be able to recommend some lower level books to get you started.

Some good advice here :) Perseverance is key.

Use Leo_chaos' idea of noting a word separately to look up later and either google it or put it in the search forum on here (main forum). You'll find that spending time reading threads relating to the subjects you search will expand your knowledge - I know because I've been silently reading it for the last couple of years and it has been invaluable. There are some very knowledgable sparks on here - may as well leach their knowledge first hand. Before you post a question, see if it has been answered before because 'it probably has'. Oh and Thanks to all of those Sparks - even the grumpy ones! Rob

I'd like to add that my spelling of leach was correct in that "Leaching is the process of extracting minerals from a solid by dissolving them in a liquid, either in nature or through an industrial process as opposed to a leech who is one who benefits, usually deliberately, from others' information or effort but does not offer anything in return, or makes only token offerings in an attempt to avoid being called a leech.
I do hope I made this clear!
Carry on!
