I usually check IP rating definitions in the back of wholesalers catalogs. Found my OSG and BRB closer to hand today so went to look in there......and couldn't find the definitions. Are they in the regs (or OSG) and I'm just not seeing them, or are they defined elsewhere?

Closest I can get in the BRB is page 239 reference BSEN60529 'Specification for degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP code)'

I'm trying to answer the following sample question for CG2382...

A junction box is to be used on a pier, what is the minimum characteristics required for this box?
a IP4X
b IPX5
c IPX7
d IPX6

So if the answer is in BSEN60529 and not in the BRB, how are you expected to answer that in a 2382 exam?

Thanks i=p/u, but unfortunately it doesn't answer my question. When I am at home, I have several sources of information to hand to give me the answer. But when taking the CG2382 exam, you only have the BRB to refer to - no internet, no wikipedia, no wholesaler's catalogs, no apps on phones. Just the BRB. The basis of my question is - how would I answer this IN THE EXAM?

The answer to your question is IPX6 for AD6 water waves on page 193 709.512.2.1.1 section 709 marinas etc
The only general reference in the regs to IP codes is appendix 5 external influences, page 323 for your sample question, hope this helps

Thanks Trebor, so if stuck on a similar question in the exam I need to think 'Environmental conditions' which in the index leads to 'External Influences' which then leads to Appendix 5 'Classification of External Influences'.

Spot on, in this type of question the answers in the question, ie look for the special location listed on page 3 BRB for a quick reference, the exception being basic protection barriers and enclosures on page 60 IP4X etc

while on this thread, where did the X come from. i have always uderstood IP ratings as IP44, IP56 etc. the first digit referring to solid ingres, and the second water/moisture. why is the first digit now X?

X means, any number. For instance, IPX4 can be IP04, IP14, IP24, IP34, IP44, IP54, IP64
It therefore refers to the 'Splashing Water' and is irrespective of object size protection.

hi mate
x means no specification required

for example ip4x the 4 is protection gainst solid objects exceeding 1 mm in diameter and 1mm wires the x is no required specifiction against moisture or liquids

if it was ipx4 then the x is no required specification against solid objects and the 4 protection against splashing water
