Hi All,

I've just passed my level 2 diploma in electrical installation and either go back to college to do my level 3 or hopefully get an apprenticeship by the end of the summer. what i want to ask is, say if i don't get an apprenticeship by the end of the summer and do level 3 what journey do i take after?

Thanks

Phil

You don't have to go through jtl mate especially when you have found your own job, and the eye test is a color blindness test which you should of already done to get on your electrical course in the first place. I would just ring him like he wants and just talk to him you don't have to say yes just hear what he is offering you.

Okay thanks mate, never done the eye test though lol? and why would i sign up to JTL? Like what advantage does it give me? So say if he gives me the apprenticeship, would i just go into college at the start of the new year and say ive got an apprenticeship and i want to go in that direction?

Never that's weird I was told I wasn't allowed on the course without a color blindness test haha, jtl are good for finding you an apprentiship if you already have one I don't think you have to sign up, once you have the apprentiship I would ring college and talk to your tutor and ask him what is the best way to go.
If it was me and this is just me I would get the apprentiship and then transfer to the c&g 2357 and then carry on and get your full qualification.
But either way mate I would defiantly ring him tomorrow and see what he offers. Can I ask did this guy cone from the emails I said to send out?

Well if i did do it i cant remember doing it lol. okay i'm going to try the college tomorrow quick before i talk to him and get a better understanding. And yeah it was, i found a site of all the local sparkys and emailed like 50 of them. might of worked! :D. Thanks for your help so far by the way!

Ok mate but just make Sure you call him mate it might be a good opportunity.

And yeah I did the same I found the competent person scheme website and emailed over 400 company's and got about 7 job offers that's where I got my job from.

Good luck mate.

did you speak to him?

i got a job as an electricians mate, i was expecting to be no a normal site, which i know lots about but ended up being industrial! completely different from anything you learn in college.

not sure if they going to keep me on as i dont know much in the industrial side of things. done a couple of days and im happy to stay if they are happy for me to stay

I emailed him in the end because i had to do some research about apprenticeships and didn't want to ring him without knowing my stuff. so i asked a tutor at college what i should do and he put me through to the JTL representative and he told me to sign up to JTL so i did and i completed all the tests and passed them and now getting a colour blind test Monday afternoon. so when that's sent off I should be ready to start an apprenticeship.

What's a normal site? So long as you've been honest about your abilities you should be Ok, they're not going to expect you to know everything. If you show willing and pick things up as you go chances are they will keep you on if they've got the work.
Do you need to serve an apprenticeship to become an electrician? I'd say no, I didn't.
Your value as an electrician comes down to your experience and abilities mostly, so try to keep it varied.
I assume the colleges are still teaching the basic skills of installing conduit and cable tray?
