Where do I stand with this one?

I was asked today to install an extractor fan in a bathroom

So I was going to take a feed off of the lighting circuit

The fan i am installing does not require a cpc

however the lighting circuit in the property does not have a cpc anyway

Can i still install the fan or do i need to make sure the lighting is earthed since I have extended the circuit?

Well for my tuppence worth as 412.2.3.2 tells us that each point and Accessory in the installation must have a CPC even for calss II. So if your working to the regulations then you can't fit it unless you supply a CPC.

Daft as it seems the supply must have a CPC even if the accessory doesn't need one.

so basically advise client that i cannot carry out work until lighting circuit is earthed?

There is another option - there is an earthed socket on the wall back to back with bathroom how about I install a FCU RCD next to it, run cable from fused rcd unit to pull cord in bathroom then go the fan from the pull cord?

hmmmmmmmmmmm are we going down the road of a circuit fed from 2 supplies.

I can not see any way you can have the fan activated as normal from the light circuit without the lighting circuit having a CPC.

malcolm I am not suggesting that the circuit is double fed.

I would have the extractor fan operating via an individual pull cord. Nothing to do with the lighting

Fan supplied off 2 circuits - no way!

once again I would like to stress that the fan would not be double fed. Fused down from ring main via RCD FCU then to pull cord then to fan - in no way connected to lighting

Just throwing an idea into the ether, how hard would it be to run a seperate earth down the outside of the house from the fan? Could there be a possible route back to the CU that way?

As Murdoch says there is no need to double feed humidistat and sensor if they need the fan and run from the fcu.

To be honest Brizo that was 2 of us that thought that was what you were suggesting, so let's not get carried away.

Yes fit via a FCU of the RFC. or as Murdoch said utilize a humidistat.

Ok, so your options are a humidistat fan, a fan with is own integral switch or a basic fan utilising the use of a PIR switch. All would need to be fed from an RCD FCU.
