Hi, im asking this because ive had alot of mixed responses and need a bit of clearing up. Ive just finished my level 3 tech cert at college and have passed the 2392 inspection and testing. I work for a small 1 man band company who supplys me with work for the week and leaves me to get on with it which is fine and i enjoy my job. However the idea of changing my career was so that i can work for myself. Im still doing the nvq part of things but was told with what ive got and my 4 years experience (not alot agreed but have come a long way) i could set up business and start work. Ive done a few private jobs and have signed of under my bosses wing of the nic eic but i know i need to certify them myself so that i have been working for the six months and done 2 jobs so that i can join the nic eic. Apart from the public liabilty side of things is there anything ive missed.
Sorry if this is a stupid question but im confused as what to do next. Also i havnt done the 17th edition yet but ive got that in september.

Many thanks in advance.:)

My advice....finish the NVQ and 17th ed first.

At least then you will be able to attain a JIB electrician grading before you leave your current employer as depending on where you want to go in the future a JIB card may open up some doors for you and it will look better if it says "electrician" on it rather than "adult trainee".

keep where you are till youve passed your 17 edition ,then look again gaiun a little more experiance , then you should be ok ,we all start some where ,well said lenny

O.k. sounds good but boss doesnt pay me enough. His idea was to keep working for him but he would let me have days off to do private work which could be done under him (hes a nice guy) but he said that it would be a chance to get my name about before any of the other lads at college beat me to it. I live on the isle of wight and my dads a property developer who is pushing me harder than a hard thing, but living on the island means work is getting hard to find. I agree that it would be best to get the nvq part of it first but if ive got enough to start and dont take anything on thats out of my league or pass anything that is to my boss, with the 17th edition do ihave enough. Sorry house is becoming hard to pay for.

Stick it out a bit longer if you can, grit your teeth for a couple of months, finish your quals and in time,is he taking the p with your pay,i was a bit above myself(not saying you are)when i finished college six years ago,got all quals and 2391,working at mountjoy, they offered me ÂŁ8 an hour as spark,i said bye bye, soon realised that i was very inexperienced,it took me time to get confident on my own in the real world,i understand if ur struggling with bills, but think of the extra knowledge/experience you can get through someone else,im on the island also and this place is difficult shall we say.

Ah fellow islander. Nah hes not that bad just pays me what he can. im gonna stick it out till ive passed my 17th as i know thats needed. but like he said i could be employed by him and work self employed on the side. With the private jobs i have done including a full rewire and a few kitchens hes always popped in to see how im doing and been there if i needed him. Obviously then tested with me aswell. A few guys at college arnt going to go any further (nvq lvl3) and a few are already talking about maybe goin at it alone. Agree, probably getting a bit above myself, but needs are a must. Experience is everything ive found that out:)
