Where to start - Electrical Courses etc

Hi everyone, i just signed up today because i am looking to start doing some electrical qualifications to make myself more employable.

I have experience working as a multi skilled engineer for the last 6 years and have always enjoyed the electrical side of the job. I have no electrical qualifications whatsoever, so i am looking at a starting point and i hope that the great members of this forum will point me in the right direction.

I'm located in South Devon and i have enough money to fund my own education.

My initial thoughts are to do the Part P and 17th edition so i can go out and get some experience in a domestic environment?? Then add to my list of qualifications as i go?

I have experience wiring out luxury superyachts and within the boats i worked on i gained experience working on consumer units, entertainment systems, machinery spaces, transformers, generators, looming out etc etc.

So i'd like to know how i can pursue this ambition of mine further

I would say find a local company to work for and do courses etc, while working with them.
Electrical work in someone's grubby home is different to a nice shiney yacht and there a lot more things to learn practically not just a few courses before u are let loose on someone's home.

17th is a good start, get ureself cracked on with that.

Part P is a misconception - people see it as a 'qualification' and it isn't.

You need to start pestering local companies to get taken on as a 'mate' and then undertake a college course...think 2357 is what you're looking for now that the 2330 has been changed.

Mate no offence just going to do part p will not make you anymore qualified, part p will be done away with ( one day I hope and pray) go to colleague and do a 2357 and Nvq 3, no other way if you want the papers, part p is not the way it's a 2 week course -_- when a apprentiship is 3-4 years .... You do the math

Hi everyone, thanks for your responses. I understand what you are all saying. I recently got laid off from my job along with many others due to the company making cost savings, so i am now in a position where i need to find work and make myself more employable.

I have been contacted today by a company called 'ATL TP' who have said that for 5k i can become a fully qualified 3 phase electrician in 18 months time by doing distant learning and going to do practical tests in their training centres etc.

Since researching this online there seems to be a lot of negative feedback on these courses, so i am now searching for the next best way.

Yes i can see what you're saying. I am going to a technology open evening at a local college next week, there is going to be most the big companies there looking for apprentices and at the age of 22 i wouldn't say i was too young. But then again i don't fit into the 16-19 age group which gets the companies there government funding.

Any more advice would be appreciated, i have looked into the 'mates' route and there doesn't seem to be many companies doing it in my area.

its 16 to 25 for funding, coz I was 21 when I did my apprenticeship

Yeh mate again these atl courses arnt great ever I know my brother tryed the plumbing one 9 months later and 6999£ later he had to enrole at east Berkshire collage,

Although I know some people that completed it ... Just becareful they tell you ALOT of lies such as you will be qualified after the time there, that's wrong because you still have no Nvq and that can only be obtained on site so you would still have to go as a apprentice / mate for a year or so after I know it's a pain but electrics takes a lot of jumping through hoops to get that gold card,

Do the 2356 course ... For non apprentices ... It's the same as the 2356 but for people not on site....

Get in a collage and they normally find you a job then you can move onto the apprentice route but ATLeast in the mean time you can get part way through your first year.
