What protection does a CU main switch offer?

Is it just a switch or does it offer overload protection too?

I have asked a few sparks, and every one said it offers overload.
When pressed for what would cause it to disconnect they did not know.

So anyone know anything about this?

Thanks,

I was working a couple of months back and realized it was something I did not know that I really really should.

I asked the guy I was apprenticed too, Mr 2391, experience is everything and he said it had overload.
As on principle I do not trust a word he says thought it would be an idea to double check, it took me this long to remember when I was next to a PC.

This guy is head of an electrical engineering department, he couldn't even do a cable calc and thought that it was dangerous to check voltage between phases.

This is one of the reasons there are MAJOR gaps in my knowledge!

One more gap filled =-)

There's never anything wrong with filling gaps in your knowledge, no matter how qualified you may be! I hold a 2391 and even I didn't know this until a few months back all because I was never taught about it when I was at college.

No one is perfect and I commend you for coming onto a public forum full of experienced sparks and risking a ribbing to ask a basic yet important question! :)

It takes guts to do it the way some have been reacting on here of late:)

For once the Americans have got it right. A switch disconnect.
Off load operation only, there is an another the Americanism I was taught as an apprentice, “never operate a switch with you’re body in front of it”. They refer to it as the left hand rule.

One reason I liked the old GEC OCB’s. You could tie a lanyard to the “pull to close” loop.
Bit of rope tied on and clear off well out of the way and pull!
