i find the BG 10 way hi integrity CUs to be excellent value. ÂŁ57 in wholesalers, ÂŁ50 b&q, ( both inc. VAT )

Here is a quick one to prove a point on the test meter website look at DiLog 9020 phase rotation tester, then cpc farnell part no IN 06210 see what I mean

Some companies employ a marketing method and if you get wind of it is a brill money saver, i once was looking for a high spec stereo system in my younger days and saw one at about ÂŁ500 but heard an obscure cheapo brand was the same internal electronics from same said manufacturer and for ÂŁ150 quid, a little research and it was confirmed and wasn't limited in anyway just cheaper looking.
A well respected well established brand can be type-cast to the enthusiast end of the market and be limited to low sales high profit, but a good marketing strategy is to also attack the market from the other end with minimal manufacturing cost so as to sell plenty with small profit... usually its all hush hush etc different branding names company address etc and when it works a company can even get a majority and play all price ranges on the shelves to say currys and comet, even the end seller is unaware his differing range may be exclusively a majority from one big company.

As said before the hardest part is to get the knowledge..... it was well practiced and harder to cover-up in the computer market with some budget brands having high end cpu's in but just locked to slower speed. A hear to the ground and the right contacts often got me a bargain price for what normally would be an expensive chip-set and all i had to do was unlock its abilities with software (saving ÂŁ300). Its not cost effective for manufacturers to design different speed chipsets within a chipset range but little or no cost to lock them down and get a different level of market.

E54, do you know anthing about CHINT stuff? Bought a couple of contactors, been working fine for a few years but boy were they cheap

Sorry No i don't!! There is plenty of it about over here, but we use all MG or I should say Schneider these days...lol!! Just had a look in my apartments DB, that's all Chint stuff...

Seems others here have used this brand and had no problems with them. Not all stuff made in China is Crap. They actually make some pretty good stuff over here, just have to be aware of the counterfeit side of things....

Look here's another one that looks exactly the same:

I wonder how much CEF are asking for it.

Look at these, I'd love to get to the bottom of all this:

They are from three different suppliers all called different names and priced differently.

Become an ISO9001 assessor, do the annual vist for one of the companies (if they are ISO registered) and carry out the paper trail for one these products.

That way you will find out who the manufacturer is, you can let us all know, and we will buy direct! :smiley2:

There are a number of far east based manufacturer's of test and measurement equipment who will manufacture and brand the products for different outlets in different countries. Like some of the above examples indicate this is also sometimes the case in our country. This especially relates to lower cost products. Instruments like Voltage Detectors, Clamp Meters, Multimeters, Socket Testers are generally perceived with a market value that doesn't make it possible to manufacture within the UK or Europe for that matter.
The testers that appear identical are very likely to be made by the same manufacturer, while still being priced differently. This could be affected by the cost for the re-seller which is often controlled by the quantitiy purchased, as well as the desired profit margin which might alter from one company to another. However, it is worth mentioning that the after sales service and guarantee that is provided with this one product might also alter from one company to the other (i.e. if the company provides extended warranty or calibration services with the equipment they might not be able to match or beat the advertised price of another company purely moving the box and processing payment).
Most of these instruments are still of decent or good quality

Internal components often change too, depending on who's purchasing the equipment, the more expensive usually using higher grade components. Some manufacturers here in China will buy the tooling and the final R&D drawing etc, and produce the units themselves... Just depends on what method is most profitable for them!! lol!!!
