Just out of interest I wondered why the majority of installers choose to install solar?

Is it:

  • Help reduce C02 emissions?
  • Help save/ make people money?
  • You find it lucrative?
  • Diversify your business in tough times?
  • You just enjoy installing solar?
  • You like being part of something bigger? (renewables revolution of sorts)

Or something else?

I'm just asking out of interest really?

Environmental issues, enjoyable work, diversifying our business.

It certainly isn't lucrative. In fact, I'm very surprised (and impressed) by firms which focus entirely on PV and still maintain a decent level of work.

+) As a solar company we feel appreciated and our customers all love us as they are making money, I was an electrician for 25 years before solar and could spend a week in hot lofts or chasing walls for customers who only ended up with sockets or lights and seemed to begrudge what it cost. As a sparky you can spend hours chasing out for kitchen points, which is usually messy and noisy then the tiler comes along and sticks some ceramic squares on the wall and it was "ooh aah lovely, here`s your cash and would you like a BJ" .

We do not do electrical work any more, purely renewables , however at least 30 electricians within 40 miles all around us, all give us their solar enquiries/ referrals and therefore we have no interest in taking their work.

-) I used to feel that we were making a difference to the planets future, however having recently come back from the USA (Vegas-we have family there) where its massive cars and cheap gas , massive food portions, little evidence of domestic renewable`s, air conditioning on 24/7, lights everywhere never switched off, in a waste waste and yet more waste society ....so now I am less convinced what good we are actually doing.

we're showing that it's possible to do, eventually the americans will catch on, and as has been shown, once they do the situation can change really fast.

Hah, made me chuckle, reminded me of Sean Lock (a comedian) in a sketch about saving the planet and this countries efforts. He said he feels its akin to turning up to a volcanic eruption with a dustpan and brush and asking if theres anything he might do, for all the difference washing out his marmite pots will make.

on a global scale I mean.

it would be great if America/china /india/ Africa made some (any) effort
