We have have just installed a supply and altered the lighting on one of the local estates we do a bit for , it was for Christies the auction house and for the Damian Hirst's pig that is cut in half and pickled in formaldehyde , about 12 million us dollars worth !

So , as you can imagine the Christies staff are going to be reasonably high level and very well paid , one of them apparently starts asking my other director as he was doing the job about becoming a sparks as they want a easier and better paid job !????
What hope is there !

I chose to be a sparky because that's what interests me and I put more into a job I like. I get to travel and meet different people, use my head to solve problems or just bang nails into walls, sometimes with my head. I'm always learning new things and always want to, I couldn't give a crap about the money. My family is housed and fed and we're happy.

This is what I'm aiming for. Just started my apprenticeship 4 months ago at the age of 20. I left school and went to the Co-Op which, after nearly 3 years, almost turned me into a brain dead zombie. For some reason I always wanted to be an electrician and have enjoyed every minute of it so far!

Actually that's a lie, when I was young I had a playmobil bin lorry and wanted to be a bin man...

It was the same with computers in the 90s - people would go around saying 'ooh, there's good money in that' so a lot of people did that. Since a lot of work got outsourced the people who just did it for the money started looking for something they thought wouldn't get outsourced - at the time the media decided to tell everyone there is a potential shortage of skilled tradesmen, which was erroneously renamed a "skills crisis" so they all came flooding from IT to plumbing (excuse the pun) and electrics on the promise of earning up to ÂŁ50,747.
Others are looking for 'something recession-proof' - since the training centres are still milking the "skills crisis" cow it still gives the impression that newly trained electricians are very much in demand, even though other reports will tell you the construction industry was the worst hit by the recession and the potential shortage was never for newly trained electricians but for highly skilled ones with many years of experience.

Personally I had always wanted to be an electrician but was discouraged from doing anything vocational, then after I had left school 'new deal' was the flavour of the moment rather than apprenticeships.

... Well actually that's not strictly true - I wanted to be an airline pilot, but that's a bit pie in the sky (again, sorry about the pun).

I wanted to be a traffic cop but couldn,t be bothered with all the sporty stuff they did back then,so I became a spark (2nd choice)
now I drive a white volvo estate with all the kit on and always stop to help at accidents, quite funny when the lads turn up and I,ve got the scene made safe ready for them.actually had 1 taking photo,s of my motor and crash kit cause he said it was better than their,s and he wanted to show his inspector.

I was doing a job in a big rented (ÂŁ2000 a month) house whe the tenant said do you know what you are doing and I replied well I used to be a traffic warden but fed u with it so 6 months ago I took a 6 week electricians course. :eek:mg_smile::eek:mg_smile:was the look on her face

I wanted to be an astronaut but I wasn’t prepared to travel so being a spark was the next best thing.
