Has anyone ever been asked this question?
Why is it so expensive?
And, what was your answer?
(I'm a newbie and needed to do a post)
*lights a fire and walks away......

And the answer to the client is 'stop expecting everything for nothing' lol.

As above, advise on a few quotes...remain polite, first impressions can count an awful lot and sometimes have the nod over price...especially if all quotes are competitive.

Your forgetting the customer who will pay ÂŁ1k for a 50" TV ÂŁ25k for a car with ÂŁ500-ÂŁ750 a year service bill that lets a guy wipe it down with an oily rag plus there is the 2 holdays a year abroad totaling ÂŁ4k and the sneaky wee long weekend away at ÂŁ700 then theres the hysterical screaming when you mention ÂŁ450 to replace the CU and upgrade the earthing.

Then again there are the customers who will thankyou for your quote then phone you a week later to say you got the job

I did a job for a friend of a friend. He is a decorater. He charges ÂŁ15 p/h. A few days after I had done the job, my friend was down there and the decorater was moaning at him about how expensive I was.......my friend is a gas safe engineer and he told him I was cheap as he charges nearly double my price. The decoraters jaw dropped. My friend said to the decorater, you charge ÂŁ15 p/h for painting a wall....we charge ÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁ for our technical knowledge and ability.

A Woman asked me how much extra sockets would cost in her new conservatory , I said ÂŁ50 each point , her words are ....That's Horendous ..... I said .... I have to pay for materials and earn a living .....she said .... I will get my son to do it ........I said go ahead then ....and walked out...... If the womans attitude was o/k I would have done it cheaper , but with attitudes like that ,what do some people expect, and that was a neighbour!!!!

Its all about priorities I never bite to goading so when I get your joking speech I always say well its all about priorities if you think its better to spend double of the quote on a TV or new computer then yep its your choice as I have said before nobody cares about that little box under the stairs

Ask them why they think it's expensive. Then ask them how much they think it should cost. Then ask them why. Then laugh at them loudly in the manner of a Victorian gent, while twirling an imaginery handlebar moustache before stating loudly and firmly "Sir, you are an imbecile. I bid you good day". They'll be on the phone to you within the hour offering you the work. I guarantee it*

*No I don't

I recently quoted three grand for a rewire of a three bed house and was told that if she had it done she couldnt afford her new carpets no bonding undersized earth three small consumer units supplying different areas of the house and not an rcd in site she was happy for me to chase in existing cables just so she could have the walls plastered go figure

Only 3 grand??? That sounds like good value to me.

And relax everyone.....
I like to point out the training ive gone through, the costs of tools, van, materials, testers, subscriptions, relevant literature, fuel. Have I missed anything?
Just the cost of a safe electrical system in the home.
Rant over. Will be in touch again soon!

I was doing a ECIR for a housing association and the woman was trying to put down lights in her bathroom. She said she was trying to get it done before the plasterer came.

I said so your paying for someone to plaster but messing with your electrics in a bathroom, which is notifiable to building control.

I have a engineering background she replied

I'd take a stab at plastering and get a electrician I replied.

She was planning on doing the kitchen next!!
