Discuss wire a single phase socket from a 3 phase rcd in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Sorry, but I think it would trip as the core would be out of balance If you were to pull a single phase from a 3 or 4 pole RCD.

You don't normally have an up front RCD on boards like this for this reason, unless all phases are equally balanced, rather the RCD's or RCBO's feeding the individual final circuits, Either TP,TP+N or SP where required.

Oops!, time for me to eat some humble pie!

I mis-read the OP, and confused myself with the difference between 3 and 4 pole RCD's.

You could in fact pull a single phase from a 4 pole RCD without it tripping, or an unbalanced TP or TP+N load, as long as all of the outgoing current/s (from which ever phase) returns back through the core, either via the Neutral (as this is also in the core), and/or via one or more of the other phases.

The other posters were correct, and I was wrong.

I put it it down to late night posting, lol, that's my excuse and Iam sticking to it! :dizzy2:

I really can't see a problem with it assuming there is a neutral there.
