I was watching an electrician wire a room stat and was unsure how it worked and he wasn't to inclined to tell me how it works,
from what i can see he wired 2.5 from boiler spur then a 1.5 3core and earth to a room stat from boiler... is this correct?

A mechanical roomstat works by the use of a bimetallic strip operating a switch, the temperature set point is adjusted by applying varying pressure to the switch using a cam or similar setup.

From an electrical point of view it is a switch which operates at a set temperature

if the stat. requires a N, then a 3 core/E is the correct cable to use.

Why would a trainee ask a trainee how something is done?? you would ask someone with experience..

The trainee section is an area where access is restricted to genuine trainees and experienced members who have made a commitment to help the trainees without making negative comments, unhelpful remarks, Mickey taking etc.

In the general forum a trainee will be treated the same as everyone else and suffer some harsh banter and Mickey taking for asking basic questions, they will also receive bad advice from people who do not recognise the limits of their own knowledge or will present their opinions as fact.

Thank you for your help.

You should always wire roomstats in 3 core in case the stat is changed in the future and requires a neutral. Pester the bloke to explain it to you.

That's what the cpc is for..... convert to switch live when needed (well, that's what my plumber mate told me). Don't you kids learn nothin in college!!

To answer your question; YES, 3 core+CPC.
Live, switched live, neutral as some stat have a small heater built in as well as a Neon, which will need a neutral. The CPC may not be required as most modern stats are double isolated, but is good practice in case a class 1 is fitted in the future
