It's something that most wouldn't do. I wouldn't seeing that you can just "chop a bit of masonry behind the back box and divert the upstairs cables behind the box."

No copyright on your post tel. I can pinch what I like.... :)

Well this seems like the better idea then... so just one last question after the cables have passed behind the box should i just keep within the 150mm zone and go left as in the pic below..

TBH I would just run them up the side of the box then centralise them to the vertical run, I can't see anyone drilling a hole within an inch of the socket so no need to faf about scutching out behind and possible losing a fixing.

This OP is classed as DIY - so why are we giving out such detailed information?

Agree normally but in this case the OP has clearly clued himself up regarding cable zoning and the question asked was basically a yes or no, telling the OP its better to run around the edge of the box rather than through is far from a step by step guide to wiring the ring main, had he continued asking for further information regarding the work then it may have been a different judgement call.

We can't stop DIYers doing their own work but where we get a one off simple question like this I think its better to give them the prefered method, the DIY section is subject to the nature and amount of info that any OP is requiring.

There is a Sticky Thread heading the DIY section by Paul.M. expressing the hazards and expected knowledge of safe isolation etc for members using this section, we either refuse all DIY advice or offer the service to help DIY out and yes agree there is a foggy area of where you draw the line so we tend to go on it case by case.

And this allows the forum to slide towards the depths of the shed forums.

No it doesn't, unlike the so call shed forums the DIY section in here is not viewable to the public nor is the section visible to them so reduces the attraction to the forum as other dedicated forums out there will come up on searches. Forum members requires admin' to give them access to view any content in the DIY section and that is only given to members who are willing to help and refrain from repeated postings of 'get an Electrician', don't get me wrong, sometimes its warranted and we do back the members up in these cases and often close the thread.
Very few regular members have DIY access and the only other members who can view them are the DIYers themselves, I cannot see how this set-up is going bring the forum into the same depths that the shed forums share tbh, I sympathise with your argument and agree we limit the info we offer for various reasons but I didn't see that to be the case in this thread as he was simply told not to run through the box but around it, the OP himself was making sure to keep to the safe zones hence he raised the query.

"It works" and "it's safe" are not necessarily the same thing. With DIY work, they are often far from the same thing.
