Hi guys,

Just a quick question. I have a 3 plate light fitting in my living room and I wish to wire up a new light fitting recently purchased from Argos.

The old ceiling rose has two neutral wires and three live (The earth is pretty straight forward). The new light fitting only has single terminals for live and neutral so how would I wire this. Would I have to put the loose wires in a choc block?

Thanks

r u sure all the neutrals r neutrals and that one of the blacks isn't a switch wire that should be marked red
are all the reds switch wires or r some of them feeds???????????????

Actually the fire service is not short staffed...!! who gives you that info...!???!

and don't make wild suggestions to just connect up and give it a go! that how people die...!

Didn't mean to misguide him. By saying that I thought he would get the message that he shouldn't be doing that without knowing what he was getting into.

Fuzzy& goody leave it now guys!! And Durham is right (well it had to happen some time), you need to be careful what you advise people to do!, there is such thing as vicarious liability which means that in certain circumstances you may be held liable even if not directly responsible, IE ADVICE.

To the Op, the 3 lives are loops, these have to be connected in alternative means other than the terminals provided leaving you with 2 neutrals, 3 cpc's and 1 switched live, these all have to be connected properly with tight terminations and sound insulation and the fitting erected safely without compromising any conductors or terminations.

Do you think you have the experience and ability to safely isolate, identify all the conductors and complete the installation as above?? If you don't then you really need to consider competent help!, as and failure to complete any if theses posts could and often does lead to required attendance from the fire service.

Happy Christmas and a top new year to you!

Agreed, however, whether you like it or not, ANYONE can change a light fitting in their home.

If someone who is a little unsure comes to the forum for advice, then i think thats better than just being told to "get a sparky to do it", because ultimately, that will just make them carry on regardless.

I have deleted numerous posts so that anyone that does want to help the op, can.

You need to end up with the same connections as you had before. Usually one wire to the "live" side of the light (should be red, or black sleeved red, or blue sleeved brown), one or two wires to the neutral side of the light (should be black or blue), and two or three wires to a seperate terminal block, which you may have to add (should be all red or brown). Provided that you've noted down exactly what went where and haven't swapped any wires, it will work exactly the same as before.

Make sure that all exposed copper wire is safely inside the terminal blocks and that the screws are firmly holding all the wires.

If in doubt, get an electrician in.

Had a problem with a light fitting supplied by my customer, burnt out out within 3 months (was not given the original packaging turned out that the manufacturers details for the fitting said for "Occasional Use Only" Customer very unhappy as it did not last long and no refund available. Fortunatly for me was able to supply customer with a proper fitting from my local wholesaler - fit for purpose. Customer happy and im happy a result for a Friday afternoon :)

I reckon he's fitted this new Argos light fitting by now, don't you?? lol!!!

Let's hope so. I was only following on from Jason's post. Maybe the next DIYer will find this in the archives.

Actually, how about a set of sticky FAQs that anyone wanting to join has to read before being allowed to ask a question.
